1Does a husband need his first wife's permission before marrying again?
Under Syariah law, the first wife's permission is not a condition for the validity of a second marriage. In Malaysia, however, the husband must first apply for Syariah Court permission, and the court will summon the existing wife to hear her views. The wife has no veto, but her evidence — for example on the husband's financial means or treatment — can influence the court's decision. Although permission is not obligatory, discussing honestly and seeking the wife's blessing is strongly required etiquette because it protects the existing bond (Surah an-Nisa' 4:19). See polygyny in Malaysia and women's rights.

2May the prospective second wife ask the man to divorce his first wife first?
No — the Prophet ﷺ forbade a woman to ask for her sister's (co-wife's) divorce so that she might take her place. In an authentic hadith, he said that it is not lawful for a woman to ask for her sister's divorce in order to 'empty her plate', for she will only receive what has been decreed for her. This prohibition also applies to an existing wife who presses her husband to divorce a new wife without a Shariah reason. If there is real injustice, the right route is the court, counselling or claiming one's own rights — not demanding that someone else be divorced. Respect other people's marriages as you want your own marriage respected.

3Is it a sin for me to feel jealous when my husband marries again?
No — jealousy is natural and not a sin as long as it does not lead to wrongful actions. The Prophet's ﷺ own wives felt jealousy; Sayyidah Aisyah r.a. once broke a dish of food sent by her co-wife, and the Prophet ﷺ only said gently, 'Your mother is jealous,' and replaced the dish. What must be guarded is your actions: do not backbite, slander, cut ties of kinship or neglect your responsibilities. Acknowledge the feeling, express it to your husband wisely, increase your supplication and patience, and seek counselling if the emotions are too heavy. The husband, for his part, must be gentle and understanding, not belittle his wife's feelings.

4May a wife set a condition in the marriage contract that her husband will not practise polygyny?
It may be stated, but its effect differs between the schools. In the Shafi'i school (Malaysian practice), a condition that 'the husband may not marry another' is regarded as contrary to a right given by the Shariah; the condition is not binding but the marriage remains valid. The Hanbali school regards the condition as valid and binding — if the husband breaches it, the wife is entitled to dissolve the marriage. The Prophet ﷺ said that the conditions most deserving to be fulfilled are those by which you made marriage lawful. In Malaysia, a more practical route is an additional taʿliq statement recorded at registration — consult the religious affairs office or your state enactment. See conditions in the contract.
Differences between the schools. Shafi'i, Hanafi and Maliki: the condition does not bind the husband though the marriage is valid; Hanbali: the condition is valid and the wife may dissolve the marriage if it is breached.

5What is an additional taʿliq and can it protect a wife if her husband takes another wife?
A taʿliq is a statement read by the husband after the contract, making talaq conditional on certain conditions; the wife can ask for an additional taʿliq. The standard taʿliq statement in Malaysia usually relates to neglect of maintenance and leaving the wife for a certain period. Some couples add other conditions, for example that if the husband marries another without the wife's knowledge, the wife can complain to the court and the talaq takes effect once proven. These additional conditions must be agreed by both parties and properly registered. The validity and form of the wording differ between states, so consult the religious affairs office or your state enactment before the contract. See taʿliq talaq.

6What are the first wife's rights after her husband marries again?
All of the first wife's rights remain in full — not one is lost because her husband marries again. She is entitled to material maintenance according to the husband's means, suitable housing, a fair rotation of nights, kind treatment and maintenance for the children. The husband may not reduce the first wife's maintenance to provide for the new wife. The Prophet ﷺ warned that a man who leans towards one of his wives will come on the Day of Judgement with one side of his body slanting. If her rights are neglected, the wife can make a claim in the Syariah Court, including a claim for maintenance or fasakh. See each wife's rights and maintenance (nafkah).

7Does the second wife have the same rights as the first wife?
Yes — under the Shariah, the second wife has the same rights as the first; there is no 'second-class' wife. She is entitled to mahr, maintenance, housing, a fair turn and kind treatment. 'First' or 'second' refers only to the order of the marriages, not to rank. Nor is the second wife obliged to obey the first wife; obedience in what is right is owed only to the husband. Likewise her children have the same rights of lineage, maintenance and inheritance as the children of the other wives. Make sure the marriage is registered so that these rights are protected by law. See each wife's rights.

8My husband married secretly without my knowledge. What can I do?
Lihat poligami rahsia.

9Must a woman accept a proposal from a man who already has a wife?
Lihat bakal isteri kedua.

10What should I ask before agreeing to become a second wife?
Ask about the things that determine fairness to you and your safety: finances, the rotation, housing, the first wife's knowledge and the status of the court application. Important questions include: What are his income and existing commitments? Where will I live? How will the rotation be arranged? Does the first wife know? Has the application for polygyny permission been made? What about the children? Involve your wali and family, and ask for proof, not promises. If the man is evasive or suggests a secret marriage or one abroad without permission, that is a serious warning sign. See prospective second wife, two-household finances and polygyny in Malaysia.

11Can the first wife object to her husband's polygyny application?
Yes — the wife is entitled to raise an objection with reasons and evidence, but the final decision lies with the judge. The most effective objection is one that concerns the legal conditions: for example, the husband cannot afford to provide, has already neglected maintenance, has acted unjustly, or the marriage will harm the wife and children. An objection without evidence relating to the conditions is usually not enough, because polygyny itself is permissible in the Shariah — but your concerns and feelings are still valid and worth stating to the court. Prepare documents such as financial statements and maintenance records. Consider the services of a Syariah lawyer or the legal aid bureau. See polygyny in Malaysia.

12Is it a sin to become a second wife?
No — becoming a second wife through a valid marriage is permissible and not a sin. The Qur'an permits men to marry up to four on strict conditions of fairness — and tells them to marry only one if they fear they cannot be fair — and there were female Companions, including wives of the Prophet ﷺ, who lived in polygynous households. What is sinful is the wrong way of going about it: carrying on a secret relationship, taking another woman's husband by deceit, pressing for the first wife's divorce, or marrying secretly without a wali and registration. Society also should not label a second wife a 'husband-stealer'. See the ruling on polygyny.

13What is the best way for a husband to tell his wife he wants to practise polygyny?
Openly, early, face to face and with full respect — do not let your wife find out from others. Choose a calm time, state the real reasons without blaming your wife, and listen to her feelings without interrupting. Explain concrete plans: finances, the rotation of nights, housing and the assurance that her rights will not be affected. Give her time to think; do not press for an immediate answer. Avoid comparing your wife with the prospective wife. Allah commands us to speak words that are true and right. If the conversation reaches deadlock, consider counselling together. 14Does a husband sin by lying to his wife about his second marriage?
Lying continually to hide a marriage is wrong and can lead to many kinds of injustice. Although the Shariah does not require the wife's permission, honesty is the foundation of trust between husband and wife. The Prophet ﷺ said that truthfulness leads to goodness and lying leads to wickedness. A secret marriage also usually means no court permission, an unfair rotation and a new wife whose rights are unprotected. In Malaysia, practising polygyny without court permission is an offence. The right way is to be open and follow the lawful procedure .

15May a wife ask for divorce because she cannot bear her husband taking another wife?
A wife may apply for separation, but the route depends on the circumstances — khulʿ, taʿliq (conditional divorce) or judicial dissolution (fasakh). A lawful polygynous marriage alone is not automatically a ground for fasakh. But if the wife truly cannot continue the marriage, to the point of fearing she cannot fulfil her husband's rights, she may apply for khulʿ (redemption divorce), like the wife of Thabit bin Qais. If the husband is unfair, neglects maintenance or causes harm, the wife may apply for fasakh or use the taʿliq. The hadith warning about women asking for divorce refers to asking 'without reason'; genuine hardship is a reason. See talaq & divorce.

16My husband is unfair between his wives. Can I apply for judicial dissolution (fasakh)?
Yes — unfair treatment of a wife in a polygynous household can be a ground for applying for judicial dissolution (fasakh) in Malaysia. Islamic family law lists among the grounds for fasakh the situation of a husband who has more than one wife but does not treat a wife fairly in accordance with the Shariah. The wife must prove the unfairness, for example with records of the rotation, unpaid maintenance or markedly different treatment. Before reaching that stage, try sulh (mediation) or counselling first. The details of the grounds and the procedure may differ between states — refer to your state Enactment. See fasakh.

17Do I need to be on good terms with my co-wife?
You are not obliged to become close friends, but you are obliged to keep the adab owed between Muslims — not wronging her, backbiting or cutting ties of kinship. A co-wife is a sister in faith; the Prophet ﷺ forbade us to envy, hate and turn our backs on one another. A good relationship makes matters concerning the children, the rotation and family occasions much easier, but it can be built slowly. Start with small things: giving salam, not questioning behind her back, and respecting each other's boundaries. If that is too hard, a polite and distant relationship is enough. The husband must not set his wives against each other.

18What is the ruling on backbiting about or badmouthing a co-wife to others?
Haram — mengumpat madu sama seperti mengumpat mana-mana Muslim.

19Must the second wife do as the first wife says?
No — there is no hierarchy of obedience between wives; each wife owes obedience only to her husband in what is right. The first wife may not give orders to the second wife, nor the other way round. Even so, respecting those who are older and have been longer in the family is good manners, and a humble second wife usually makes acceptance easier. The husband is responsible for setting fair rules for everyone — the rotation, expenses and shared matters — so that the wives do not need to quarrel among themselves. See relations between co-wives.

20Does the first wife have more rights because she has been married longer?
No — in the rotation of nights and basic maintenance, all wives are equal regardless of who came first or has been married longer. The only exception is the opening period for a new wife: seven nights if she is a virgin and three nights if previously married, before the normal rotation begins. After that, each wife receives an equal share. Even so, the contribution of a first wife who has been with her husband for a long time deserves to be appreciated with kind words and treatment, because Allah tells us not to forget the kindness between spouses. See fiqh of polygyny.
Difference between schools. The Hanafi school gives no special opening nights to a new wife; the majority (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) give seven nights to a virgin and three to a previously married woman.

21Is it wrong for me to post photos with my husband on social media that my co-wife also sees?
It is not forbidden, but in polygyny it calls for finer judgement.
Sharing family photos that are modest and cover the ʿawrah is permissible. But if the purpose or effect is to show off, make digs or stoke the co-wife's jealousy, it can lead to sin and damage the family ties that the husband must protect. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or keep silent" — and a social media post is a form of speech. The husband, for his part, must also be fair in public display: constantly featuring one wife while hiding the others can be felt as unfairness. Many polygynous families agree on a shared etiquette — for example no comparisons, no digs, and respect for each household's privacy. See Relations between co-wives.

22I feel I am not good enough because my husband married again. Is it my fault?
Your husband's second marriage does not necessarily mean you have failed as a wife. Men take another wife for many reasons — some reasonable and some not — and it is not a measure of your worth before Allah. A woman's honour is measured by her piety, not by whether she is the only wife. Do not blame yourself excessively, but if there are things in the relationship that genuinely can be improved, discuss them honestly. Look after your mental health: talk to someone you trust, keep up your routine of worship, and get professional counselling if needed.

23Should the prospective second wife meet the first wife before marrying?
It is not obligatory, but a good meeting — if the first wife is willing — can help a great deal. It shows good intentions, reduces misunderstanding and gives a true picture of the family situation. But do not press; the first wife may not yet be emotionally ready, and that is her right. Ideally the husband arranges it with the agreement of both parties, in a neutral place, perhaps with family members present. Avoid meetings meant to show off or to argue. Humility and respect for the first wife's feelings are very important.

24Do my stepchildren become mahram?
Yes, with details: stepchildren become permanently mahram under verse 4:22–23. A wife's daughter (rabibah) becomes mahram to the husband once he has consummated the marriage with her mother. A father's wife (stepmother) becomes permanently mahram to the husband's sons as soon as the contract is made, even before consummation. This means the second wife is mahram to the first wife's sons, and her ʿawrah before them is the same as before other mahram. If unsure about mahram status in a particular situation, consult the mufti's office. See mahram and children & polygyny.

25How should I treat my co-wife's children?
Lihat anak & poligami.

26The children are angry that their father married again. What should I do?
Acknowledge the children's feelings, do not stir them up, and encourage their father to take responsibility for talking with them himself. Children, especially teenagers, may feel betrayed or worry about losing their father's attention. A mother should not fan their anger, even though she herself is hurt; teach them to respect their father while allowing them to voice their feelings. The father needs to explain honestly, keep up his time with the children, and make sure their maintenance is not affected. If relations deteriorate, family counselling helps a great deal. 27I am a divorcee with children, about to become a second wife. Who bears my children's maintenance (nafkah)?
Your children's maintenance remains the duty of their biological father, not your new husband. A mother's remarriage does not cancel the former husband's responsibility for the children's maintenance. The new husband is not obliged to support his stepchildren, but if he willingly helps, that is charity and a great kindness. Discuss this clearly before the contract: who bears the school fees, housing and daily expenses. Custody (hadhanah) of the children may also be affected when the mother remarries — get advice from a Syariah lawyer. See child maintenance and maintenance (nafkah).

28May my husband use my money or property to marry a new wife?
29My husband seems to love the younger wife more. Is that unfair?

May I pray for harm to befall my co-wife?
No. Feeling hurt is human and not a sin, but praying for harm to befall a Muslim who has not wronged you is forbidden.
Your co-wife committed no sin by marrying lawfully. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." He also taught that when someone prays for good for their brother without his knowledge, the angel says: "And for you the same." So the supplication that benefits you most is one for your own peace of heart, your husband's fairness, and the good of all the children. If you are genuinely wronged — maintenance or your turn denied — claim those rights through lawful channels, not through prayers for harm. See Relations between co-wives and Counselling.

31I have fallen in love with a married man. What should I do?
Keep your boundaries at once and, if it is serious, take the lawful route — a formal proposal to the wali (guardian), not a secret relationship. The feeling itself may be unavoidable, but exchanging affectionate messages, meeting alone or carrying on a secret relationship is forbidden and wrongs his wife and family. Ask yourself: is he able to be fair? Is he honest with his wife? If the answers are doubtful, it is better to step away. Pray istikharah and seek your family's advice. If he is serious, he will come to propose through your wali and follow the procedure.

32My family does not agree to my becoming a second wife. What now?
Listen to their concerns seriously — the blessing of the wali and family is a protection, not an obstacle. In the Shafi'i school, a woman needs a wali to marry, so the consent of her father or wali matters. Family objections often arise from genuine concerns about justice, finances or the status of the marriage. Invite the man to meet the family and answer their questions openly. If the wali refuses without a Shariah reason even though the candidate is compatible, the Syariah Court can assess the issue of a refusing wali (adhal) — but this is the last resort. See wali.
Difference between schools. The Hanafis allow a sane adult woman to marry herself to a compatible spouse without a wali; the Shafi'is, Malikis and Hanbalis require a wali.

33My husband asks me (the second wife) to keep our marriage secret. Should I agree?
Be careful — a secret marriage often leads to the oppression of the rights of wife and children. Even though a marriage that fulfils its pillars is valid under the Shariah, keeping it entirely secret goes against the sunnah of announcing marriages, and in Malaysia a marriage that is unregistered or without polygyny permission gives rise to offences and problems with the children's documents. You may find it hard to claim maintenance, confirmation of lineage or inheritance. If your husband refuses to register or openly acknowledge you, that is a sign he is not ready to be fair. Go to the religious affairs office to register the marriage. See secret polygyny.

34I have a chronic illness and my husband wants to marry again. Are my rights reduced?
No — a sick wife's rights remain in full, and the husband must continue to care for her well. Illness is a trial, not a fault. A husband may marry again for permitted reasons, but he must still provide maintenance, the treatment he can afford, her turn and compassionate treatment. The court also assesses whether the new marriage will harm the existing wife. If you are worried, discuss a care plan in writing. 35Is there a supplication or practice to calm the heart when one's husband takes another wife?
There is no specific supplication for when one's husband takes another wife, but there are many authentic supplications and practices to calm the heart. Allah says that in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest. Keep to praying on time, dhikr, reading the Qur'an and the supplication at times of calamity: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un, Allahumma'jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khairan minha.' Ummu Salamah r.a. once described herself as a woman of strong jealousy when the Prophet ﷺ proposed to her, and he prayed that Allah would remove it. 36People call me a 'husband-stealer' because I am a second wife. How do I cope?
That label is unfair if your marriage is valid and was entered into the right way. Allah forbids mocking people and calling them by offensive nicknames. At the same time, understand that the anger often comes from the pain of the first wife and her family. Do not respond on social media or argue in public; dignified silence is usually more effective. Show through your conduct that you mean no harm to anyone. If the harassment becomes extreme — threats, slander or attacks — you can seek legal protection. See counselling.

37May the first wife herself choose a second wife for her husband?
Yes — there is no prohibition, but it is not required by the Shariah; only a small number of wives choose this path. A wife who is involved in choosing may be more confident of the candidate's character and find it easier to accept. Even so, the candidate must still consent freely, and the husband still bears all the conditions of fairness and must apply for the court's permission. Never feel compelled to do it to prove your 'sincerity'; it is a personal choice, not a measure of faith. Also make sure the candidate is not among the women who may not be married together, such as the wife's sister or aunt. See criteria.

38Is it wrong of me not to want to meet my co-wife at all?
It is not wrong — you are not obliged to socialise with or meet your co-wife, as long as there is no wrongdoing or cutting of ties in a hurtful way. Each wife is entitled to privacy and her own home. Some women need a long time to accept the situation, and that is natural. What is forbidden is actively hating, slandering, or preventing the children from knowing their paternal half-siblings. At the least, keep basic courtesy if you run into each other, such as giving salam. If one day you are ready, the relationship can still be built — there is no pressure to rush.

39What is the relationship between my children and my co-wife's children?
They are paternal half-siblings — mahram to one another and they inherit from each other under faraid. This relationship is a blood tie that cannot be severed by disagreements between their mothers. Encourage the children to know and respect their paternal half-siblings, as suits their age and circumstances. The father must be fair in gifts to all the children; the Prophet ﷺ refused to witness a gift given to only one child. In inheritance, the children of all the wives inherit at the same rates according to gender. See children & polygyny and faraid.

40I did not give permission, but my husband still wants to marry. What are my options?
Under the Shariah a husband may marry without your permission, but in Malaysia the court will assess it, and you still have options. First, put forward your views and evidence in court when his application is heard. Second, try sulh (mediation) or counselling to find a middle way. Third, if you cannot continue, you may apply for khulʿ, or for fasakh if there is harm or unfairness. Fourth, make sure your financial rights — maintenance, jointly acquired matrimonial property — are recorded. Your feelings are natural; take time and seek support from people you trust before making big decisions.

41What are the signs that a husband is not fit to practise polygyny?
The main sign is that he has already failed to be fair or to fulfil his responsibilities to his existing family. These include: the wife's and children's maintenance often in arrears; borrowing for basic needs; neglecting prayer and religious duties; a hot temper or having caused injury; hiding relationships and lying; or wanting to marry secretly abroad. Allah says: if you fear you will not be able to be fair, then (marry) only one. A prospective wife and her wali should weigh these signs honestly. See conditions for polygyny and two-household finances.

42I am a second wife and fear being divorced because the first wife is pressing for it. What are my rights?
You are a lawful wife with full rights, and pressure from others for you to be divorced is forbidden in the hadith. The Prophet ﷺ forbade a woman to ask for her sister's divorce — this prohibition applies in both directions. If your husband does divorce you, you are entitled to ʿiddah maintenance, mutʿah (consolatory gift), and other rights like any divorced wife. Make sure the marriage is registered so that these rights can be claimed in court. Try to be patient and conciliatory, because such pressure usually comes from pain, not merely hatred. See prospective second wife.

43How can the first wife make sure her husband is truly able to practise polygyny?
Ask for financial transparency and a written plan; if necessary, raise those concerns with the court. Discuss net income, debts, commitments to children and the estimated cost of a second household. A maintenance calculator can help make a realistic projection. During the application, the court assesses the husband's financial ability to support all his dependants, and the wife may give relevant evidence. Also make sure there is a plan for emergencies, such as losing his job. See the maintenance calculator, two-household finances and polygyny in Malaysia.

44Should I (the prospective second wife) contact the first wife myself without the man's knowledge?
Usually not advisable — informing the first wife is the husband's responsibility. Contacting the first wife suddenly can shock her and make matters worse, especially if she does not yet know. But if you suspect the man is lying about his marital status or his wife's agreement, verifying it is your right before making a lifelong decision. A better way: ask him to inform his wife first and show proof of the court application. If he refuses, that is a clear enough answer. See relations between co-wives.

45Does a wife who is patient when her husband takes another wife earn reward?
Yes — patience in trials, including feelings of jealousy and sadness, is promised reward by Allah. Allah says that the patient are given their reward without measure, and the Prophet ﷺ said that no hardship or sorrow befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates his sins through it. Patience does not mean swallowing injustice in silence; a wife can still claim her rights and remind kindly. Patience is guarding your tongue, actions and faith when your heart is hurting. If there is injustice, seeking justice is also an act of worship. See counselling.

46Should I pray istikharah before accepting or rejecting polygyny?
Yes, it is strongly encouraged — whether you are the existing wife whose blessing is sought or the woman being proposed to as a second wife. The Prophet ﷺ taught the Companions istikharah in all matters as he taught them a surah of the Qur'an. Istikharah is not waiting for a dream; it is asking Allah to choose what is best and then moving forward with effort. Combine it with istisyarah — consulting family, people of knowledge and those who know the man. Assess the facts honestly: the means, character and readiness of everyone involved. See supplication & prayer.

47The first wife works and has her own salary. May the husband reduce her maintenance (nafkah) for the second wife?

48How can trust be rebuilt after a husband takes another wife?
Trust is rebuilt through consistent honesty, promises kept and open communication — by the husband, not carried by the wife alone. The husband needs to be transparent about schedules, finances and family decisions. The wife, for her part, can state her needs clearly and allow room for change. Set aside 'time together' undisturbed by the other household's affairs. Avoid raking things up repeatedly, but do not hide the hurt. Allah placed between husband and wife mawaddah and rahmah (affection and mercy); these can be nurtured again. Couples counselling helps a great deal.

49As a second wife, how can I show respect to the first wife?
Respect her space, time and feelings — do not compete openly or show off. Do not contact your husband excessively on the first wife's nights except in an emergency. Avoid posting photos or statuses that could hurt her. Do not speak ill of her to your husband or the children. If you meet, greet her and be humble. Show that you appreciate her part in building the family before you arrived. The Prophet ﷺ said that none of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

50How can the first wife protect her dignity and rights without hostility?
Be firm on rights, gentle in manner — seek fairness through the proper channels without personal attacks. Know your rights: maintenance, the rotation of nights, housing and property. Keep written records. Set clear boundaries, for example no discussion of the co-wife in front of the children. If there is a problem, take it to your husband, then to a mediator, and finally to the court if necessary — not to social media. Allah says: repel evil with what is better. Your dignity is preserved when your actions remain fair even though your heart is hurt. See women's rights.
