MYPolygyny
For the prospective wife

If you are about to become a second wife

This page is written for you, not to persuade you. In this matter, you are the party with the least information and the most risk. This is what you need to do before saying yes.

One sentence, first

Tanpa pendaftaran, hak anda tidak terbela di sisi undang-undang

Even if the nikah is valid under Sharia. No maintenance claim in court, no matrimonial property, no clear faraid, and the child faces documentation problems. All protection begins with registration.

Sekilas pandang
Sebelum bersetuju

Tujuh perkara sebelum anda berkata ya

  • Lihat perintah mahkamah, bukan janji
  • Jangan terima nikah di sempadan sebagai jalan mudah
  • Lihat angka sebenar: slip gaji, penyata bank, hutang
  • Tanya tentang isteri pertama — dan dengar jawapannya
  • Bincang giliran dan tempat tinggal sebelum akad
  • Fahami hak anda ke atas mahar dan nafkah
  • Simpan salinan segala-galanya

Seven things before you agree

1 · Make sure he already has the court's permission

Ask to see the court order, not promises. If he has not applied, you are being asked to join in an offence — and the fine and the record will become part of your marriage.

2 · Do not accept a border marriage as the easy way

Marrying in Thailand or abroad does not bypass the law. It only postpones the problem, and those who bear that postponement are usually you and your child, not him.

3 · Look at the real figures, not promises

Payslips, bank statements, a list of debts and existing commitments. Use the calculator together. If he refuses to show them now, he will not show them after the akad.

4 · Ask about the first wife — and listen to the answer

Does she know? Will she be called to court? A marriage that begins with deceiving one woman rarely ends with honesty towards the other.

5 · Discuss turns and housing before the akad

How many nights? Where will you live? Who pays? These are the number one source of disputes after polygyny — according to JKSM itself, maintenance and turn-taking.

6 · Understand your rights to mahar and maintenance

Mahar is your absolute right, not your family's right. Maintenance is an obligation enforceable in court, not a gift that depends on his goodwill.

7 · Keep copies of everything

Marriage certificate, court order, receipts, messages about financial promises. Women who lose cases in court often do so not because they are not telling the truth, but because they cannot prove it.

Warning signs

None of the signs above means he is a bad person. It means you do not yet have enough information to make a decision — and this decision is too big to make with insufficient information.

For the existing wife

You will be summoned to court to be heard. That is your right, not a formality.

Where to get help. Your State Islamic Religious Department has a family counselling unit, and the Syariah Court has sulh (mediation) officers. Both are free. See Counselling.
