Criteria for husbands, criteria for wives

Before asking whether someone is fit for polygyny, the earlier question is whether he is fit to be a husband — even in a single household. This page lists those foundations for both parties.

"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy."

Surah ar-Rum 30:21

Those three words — sakinah (tranquillity), mawaddah (affection), rahmah (mercy) — are the true measure of a household. Not the number of wives.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5090

Choose the one with religion

A woman is married for four things — wealth, lineage, beauty, religion. This hadith does not dismiss the other three; it sets the priority. The three can be lost; the one endures.

Criteria for the husband / head of the family

Religion and prayer

An imam who does not guard his own prayer cannot lead anyone. This is the foundation before everything else.

Responsible as provider

"Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you will be asked about his flock." — Sahih al-Bukhari 893, Sahih Muslim 1829

Good treatment

"Take my advice to treat women well." — Sahih al-Bukhari 3331. He repeated it twice in the same hadith.

Real financial capacity

Not hopes or plans. Nafkah (maintenance) is a right that can be claimed in court, not a gift.

Restraining anger and tongue

A home that is feared is not a peaceful home. Sakinah and fear cannot coexist.

Basic knowledge of household fiqh

The rights and responsibilities of both parties, maintenance, turn-taking, and talaq — learnt before they are needed.

Criteria for the wife

"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion. So choose the one with religion."

Sahih al-Bukhari 5090

Religion, first

The hadith above does not dismiss the other three — it sets the priority. Those three can be lost; that one endures.

Guarding the husband's trust

"This world is an enjoyment, and the best enjoyment of this world is a righteous woman." — Sahih Muslim 1467

Willingness to communicate

Most households do not collapse because of big things, but because of small things that were never voiced.

Content with what is halal

Gratitude for what one has is the foundation of a peaceful household.

Basic religious knowledge

Purification, prayer, the rights of husband and wife — so that the home is built on knowledge, not custom alone.

Guarding the dignity and privacy of the home

What happens in the home stays in the home.

Religious knowledge you must have

Allah says: "O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from the Fire" (Surah at-Tahrim 66:6). One cannot protect a family with knowledge one does not have — so this knowledge is learnt before the contract, not after problems arise.

Other qualities

Husband

Religion and character — both

"When a man whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you (to propose), then marry him." — Sunan at-Tirmidhi 1084. Religion without good character is not enough.

Husband

Good to his family

"The best of you is the one who is best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family." — Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3895. The measure of a man's goodness begins at home.

Husband

Able (al-ba'ah)

"O young men, whoever among you is able, let him marry." — Sahih al-Bukhari 5066, Sahih Muslim 1400. Able in terms of maintenance, physical ability and responsibility.

Husband

Trustworthy, honest and true to his word

Not hiding debts, other marriages, or his true circumstances from his wife and family.

Wife

Righteous (solehah)

Guarding her religion, herself and her husband's trust — "the best adornment of this world is a righteous woman." — Sahih Muslim 1467.

Wife

Obedient in what is right (makruf)

Obedience has limits: "Obedience is only in what is right (makruf)." — Sahih al-Bukhari 7257, Sahih Muslim 1840. There is no obedience in sin.

Wife

Contentment (qana'ah) and gratitude

Content with lawful provision, and not demanding beyond the husband's means.

Both

Patient, forgiving and open-hearted

A household is built by two imperfect people. Small mistakes are forgiven; big matters are discussed.

Both

Healthy and ready

Pre-marital health screening, and emotional readiness for new responsibilities.

Specific to polygyny

All of the above applies. In addition, each party in polygyny needs this extra knowledge.

A husband intending polygyny

The fiqh of justice (al-qasm)

  • The four-wife limit, and the condition of justice — if you fear you will not be just, then only one (an-Nisa' 4:3).
  • A fair and fixed rotation of nights (giliran) — it is every wife's right, not a matter of discretion.
  • Maintenance and separate accommodation for each wife; they are not forced to live in the same house without their consent.
  • Drawing lots when travelling — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew lots among his wives (Sahih al-Bukhari 2593).
  • The prohibition on combining two sisters (an-Nisa' 4:23), or a woman with her aunt (Sahih al-Bukhari 5109, Sahih Muslim 1408).
  • A warning to a husband who favours one wife: he will come on the Day of Judgement with one side of his body leaning (Sunan Abu Dawud 2133).
  • The law: the written permission of the Syariah Court first, and registration of every marriage.
A prospective second (or subsequent) wife

Enter in the right way

  • Make sure the marriage goes through court permission and is registered — without it, rights to maintenance, inheritance and the children's documents are at risk.
  • A valid wali — not a secret marriage abroad.
  • Not asking for an existing wife to be divorced: "It is not lawful for a woman to ask (a husband) to divorce her sister." — Sahih al-Bukhari 5152.
  • Knowing her own rights: mahr, maintenance, her turn in the rotation and her own accommodation.
  • Respecting the existing wife and her children — they are family.
Existing wife

Rights to know

  • The right to be summoned and heard by the court during a polygyny application.
  • Rights to maintenance, rotation of nights and accommodation that are not reduced by a new marriage.
  • The right to claim harta sepencarian, and to apply for fasakh if wronged or not given maintenance.
  • Taʿliq and conditions agreed at the contract still apply.
  • See Women's rights and Counselling for help.

For both parties — monogamy and polygyny

An honest note. The list below is not specific to polygyny. It is the foundation of a happy household in any circumstances — and that is the point: anyone who cannot build it in one household will not build it in two.
BasicsIn monogamyIn polygyny
Open communicationSmall things are voiced before they become big.Doubled — there are now two parties to be heard, and silence is quickly misinterpreted.
Fair turn-taking & timeEnough time for the family, not the leftovers after work.Obligatory and countable. Overnight turns are a right, not a matter of discretion.
Financial transparencyBoth parties know the real situation.Financial secrecy here becomes the most common cause of conflict.
Holding one's tongueNot comparing with other people's households. Not comparing the two wives — nothing damages both homes faster.
Family supportGood relations with the in-laws.Both families need to know; secret marriages almost always end badly.
PatienceDaily patience. The same patience, doubled, with no end that can be scheduled.
The most useful test. If the first household is not at peace today, a second marriage will not bring it peace. It will double what is already there — whether good or bad.
