Age, wali & mahar
Three things that decide whether a marriage can take place at all.
Umur minimum berkahwin — undang-undang negeri
Tiga perkara yang menentukan sama ada nikah boleh berlaku
Minimum age
Men 18 years · Women 16 years
Below that age, marriage requires the written permission of a Syariah Judge — and the court assesses each case separately. Age is calculated by the Gregorian calendar on the date of the akad.

No wali, no marriage
In the Shafi'i school followed in Malaysia, a contract without a wali is not valid. A wali who refuses without reasonable cause can be replaced by a wali hakim through an application to the Syariah Court — not bypassed.

The mahar is the wife's absolute right
A gift from the husband to the wife, stated during the akad. It belongs entirely to the wife — not to her father, her family, or to be shared. If not mentioned, it becomes mahar mithil according to custom.
Surah an-Nisa' 4:4Hantaran is not a Sharia requirement
A good Malay custom when reasonable and a burden when not. It does not affect the validity of the marriage, and its amount should not stand in the way of a good marriage.
