Adab of marital intimacy
Intimacy within marriage is worship, a shared right and a trust. The Shariah sets out its adab, the forbidden limits, the duty to keep secrets, and justice between wives in polygyny.
- Understand lawful marital intimacy as worship and a shared right
- Know the clear prohibitions: menstruation, postnatal bleeding, anal intercourse, ihram, daytime in Ramadan and coercion
- Recognise when to consult a doctor or counsellor without shame
Key point: Intimacy (nafkah batin) is the right of both husband and wife, fulfilled with gentleness, cleanliness and willingness, without coercion or harm. The secrets of the bedroom must be kept, and consulting a doctor or counsellor when there is a problem does not breach that trust.
- Practise the du'a before intimacy (Sahih al-Bukhari 5165) and teach it to your spouse
- Check your conversations and social media — make sure none of your spouse's secrets are exposed
- If there is pain or an erection problem, make an appointment with a doctor this week
- Jangan sengaja mengabaikan seorang isteri sehingga memudaratkannya
1Lawful intimacy as worship
Allah describes spouses as garments for one another: "They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them" (Surah al-Baqarah 2:187). A garment covers, protects, gives warmth and beauty — so is the relationship of husband and wife.
The Prophet ﷺ said that in lawful marital intimacy there is the reward of charity. The Companions asked how a person could fulfil his desire and be rewarded; he replied: "Do you not see that if he were to put it in something unlawful, he would bear a sin? So likewise if he puts it in what is lawful, he has a reward" (Sahih Muslim 1006).
The intention of guarding oneself and one's spouse from zina, gaining righteous offspring and bringing joy to one's spouse makes it a valuable deed.
2Intimacy (nafkah batin): a right of both parties
Intimacy (nafkah batin) is not solely the husband's right. When 'Abdullah bin 'Amr r.a. fasted every day and prayed all night, the Prophet ﷺ corrected him: "…your body has a right over you… and your wife has a right over you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5199).
- The husband's right — a wife does not refuse without a valid Shariah excuse (Sahih al-Bukhari 5193; Sahih Muslim 1436). Valid excuses include illness, menstruation/postnatal bleeding, severe exhaustion, harm or trauma.
- The wife's right — a husband may not deliberately neglect his wife. Surah al-Baqarah 2:226–227 limits ila' (an oath to abstain from one's wife) to four months; after that the husband must return to her or separate.
| Mazhab | The minimum required of the husband |
|---|---|
| Hanbali | Obligatory; it may not be neglected for more than four months without a valid excuse, based on the ruling on ila'. |
| Maliki | Obligatory; neglecting it to the point of harming the wife can be grounds for separation. |
| Hanafi | Religiously obligatory (diyanatan) from time to time; judicially, at least once. |
| Syafi'i | In terms of judicial enforcement, the right is counted as fulfilled at least once; but it is strongly encouraged not to neglect it, and it is haram if the aim is to cause harm. |
3Adab and du'a
- Cleanliness and appearance — keeping yourself, your mouth and your clothes clean is part of mu'asyarah bil-ma'ruf (Surah an-Nisa' 4:19). Ibn Abbas r.a. said he adorned himself for his wife just as he liked her to adorn herself for him, citing 2:228 (Tafsir at-Tabari).
- Gentleness and preparation — begin with affection, kind words and the willingness of both; do not rush.
- Du'a — the Prophet ﷺ said that if a man, when he wishes to approach his wife, says: "Bismillah, Allahumma jannibnasy-syaitan wa jannibisy-syaitana ma razaqtana" (In the name of Allah. O Allah, keep Satan away from us and keep Satan away from what You grant us), and then a child is decreed for them, Satan will not harm it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5165; Sahih Muslim 1434).
- The obligatory bath — the ritual bath (mandi junub) is obligatory after intimacy before prayer. If one wishes to sleep or to repeat, ablution (wuduk) is recommended (narrated by Muslim).
- Lawful variety — "Your wives are a tilth for you, so approach your tilth however you wish" (Surah al-Baqarah 2:223): freedom of manner and position, on condition that it is in the lawful place (the vagina).
4Clear prohibitions
1. During menstruation and postnatal bleeding. "…So keep away from women (do not have intercourse) during menstruation, and do not approach them until they are pure…" (Surah al-Baqarah 2:222). Intimacy other than intercourse is permitted: "Do everything except intercourse" (Sahih Muslim 302). The Shafi'i school also forbids skin contact between the navel and the knees without a barrier during menstruation; some other scholars (including the Hanbalis) forbid only intercourse.
- After the bleeding stops — the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools require the wife to take the obligatory bath first ("when they have purified themselves", 2:222). The Hanafi school permits it after the maximum period of menstruation (10 days) or after one prayer time has passed.
- If it happens — repentance is obligatory. The Shafi'i school recommends (sunat) giving charity; the Hanbali school (the relied-upon view) makes an expiation (kaffarah) of a dinar or half a dinar obligatory, based on a narration of Abu Dawud whose authenticity is disputed.
2. Anal intercourse. Haram in the relied-upon view of all four schools. The evidence: "Cursed is the one who approaches his wife in her anus" (Sunan Abu Dawud 2162; hasan) and the narration of at-Tirmidhi that Allah will not look at a man who approaches a woman in her anus (hasan). Verse 2:223 speaks of a 'tilth' — the place where offspring grow.
3. During ihram and the daytime in Ramadan — it invalidates hajj/umrah or the fast; intercourse during the day in Ramadan makes an expiation (kaffarah) obligatory (Sahih al-Bukhari 1936).
4. Coercion and harm — anything that hurts, humiliates or endangers a spouse's health is haram (la darar wa la dirar).
5Keeping the secrets of the bedroom
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Among the worst of people in standing before Allah on the Day of Resurrection is the man who is intimate with his wife and she with him, and then he spreads his wife's secret" (Sahih Muslim 1437).
- This prohibition applies to both husband and wife — including telling friends, on social media, or in WhatsApp groups.
- In polygyny, one may not tell one wife about another, compare them, or use it to provoke jealousy.
- Exception: telling a doctor, counsellor, Syarie lawyer or judge when necessary for treatment or to claim one's rights — only as much as is needed.
6Justice in polygyny: rotation of nights, not feelings
In the Shafi'i school and the majority view, what must be divided fairly is the rotation of nights (qasm) — the same number of nights for each wife — not the frequency of intercourse or feelings, since these depend on desire that is not fully within one's control (Surah an-Nisa' 4:129). Yet a husband may not deliberately neglect a wife to the point of harming her.
- The wedding night — the Sunnah is to give a new wife who is a virgin seven nights and a previously married woman three nights, after which the rotation returns to equal shares (Sahih al-Bukhari 5214; Sahih Muslim 1461).
- Giving up one's turn — a wife may willingly give her turn to her co-wife, as Sawdah r.a. did to Aishah r.a. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5212). It must be given without coercion and may be withdrawn for the future.
- No intercourse on another wife's night without her permission; a daytime visit for a need is allowed.
- A man who inclines excessively towards one wife is warned that he will come on the Day of Resurrection with one side of his body leaning (narrated by Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi; sahih).
7When to consult a doctor or counsellor
Problems with intimacy are common and treatable. Seeking help is not shameful and is not spreading secrets.
