1What are a wife's rights over her husband in Islam?
A wife is entitled to receive the mahr, maintenance, suitable housing and good treatment from her husband.
The Qur'an commands husbands to live with their wives in kindness (ma'ruf), and affirms that wives have rights balancing their duties. In the Farewell Pilgrimage sermon, the Prophet ﷺ urged fear of Allah in the matter of women, and said that their provision and clothing are the husband's responsibility in a reasonable manner. A wife's rights also include intimate maintenance, not being harmed, having her dignity protected, being taught religion and having her own property respected. He said that the best of people are those best to their wives. Further explanation is on the Rights of husband & wife and Maintenance pages.

2What are a husband's rights over his wife?
The husband's main rights are his wife's obedience in what is right (ma'ruf), her guarding herself and her husband's property, and not admitting into the home anyone the husband dislikes.
Allah describes the righteous wife as obedient and guarding herself in her husband's absence. The Prophet ﷺ forbade a wife from fasting voluntarily while her husband is present except with his permission, and from letting anyone into the house without his permission. The wife is also made responsible as guardian of her husband's household. But this obedience is limited to what is right: there is no obedience in sin. The husband's rights come with the responsibility of leadership and maintenance; they are not absolute power. See Rights of husband & wife.

3What do material maintenance and intimate maintenance mean?
Material maintenance is the wife's material needs, while intimate maintenance is the need for affection and marital intimacy.
Material maintenance (nafkah zahir) covers food, clothing, housing and other basic needs according to the husband's means and local custom. Allah says the father must bear the food and clothing of the wife in a reasonable manner. Intimate maintenance (nafkah batin) refers to intimacy, affectionate treatment, attention and time together. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that a husband's intimacy with his wife also counts as charity. Both are the wife's rights; neglecting either can be an injustice and in certain circumstances can be the basis of a claim at the Syariah Court. See Maintenance and Glossary.

Surah al-Baqarah 2:233Sahih Muslim, Kitab az-ZakahSahih Muslim, Kitab al-Hajj
4How much maintenance must a husband give his wife?
There is no fixed figure in the texts; maintenance is measured by the husband's means and the wife's reasonable needs.
Allah says that the one with ample means should spend according to his means, and the one whose provision is restricted should spend from what Allah has given him. This means a high-earning husband should not give at a minimum level, and a struggling husband is not burdened beyond his capacity. If there is a dispute, the Syariah Court will assess the husband's income, the wife's needs and the local cost of living before setting an amount. Use our calculator as an initial guide only, and refer to Maintenance to plan the family budget.

Difference between schools. The Shafi'i school classically sets the amount of food according to the husband's status (rich, middling, poor), whereas the Hanafis, Malikis and Hanbalis measure it by the wife's sufficiency (kifayah) according to custom.
Surah at-Talaq 65:7Surah al-Baqarah 2:233Sahih al-Bukhari 5364
5The husband gives no maintenance — what can the wife do?
A wife can claim maintenance through the Syariah Court, and unpaid maintenance remains a debt owed by the husband.
The first step is to discuss it amicably or through counselling at the religious affairs office. If that fails, the wife can file a maintenance claim, including arrears. In the hadith of Hind, the Prophet ﷺ allowed a wife to take from a miserly husband's wealth what is sufficient for herself and her children, reasonably (ma'ruf). Failure to provide maintenance for a certain period can also be grounds for fasakh under state enactments. Refer to Procedure, Counselling and Talaq & divorce.

Differences between the schools. The majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) regard unpaid maintenance as a debt even without a court order; the Hanafis originally treat it as a debt only once it has been fixed by a judge or agreed.

6Must a wife cook and do housework?
According to the Shafi'i school, housework such as cooking and washing is not a Shariah obligation on the wife, but it is a noble deed if done willingly.
The obligation to provide for the home's needs lies on the husband as part of maintenance, including a helper for a wife who was used to being served in her family, according to the husband's means. However, most households run on cooperation and custom. Fatimah r.a. herself did housework, and the Prophet ﷺ helped with his family's chores. Best is a fair division of tasks reached through discussion. See Rights of husband & wife.

Difference between schools. Shafi'i and Hanbali: not legally obligatory. Maliki: obligatory according to custom for women who customarily do housework. Hanafi: required as a religious duty (diyanah) but not compelled by the court.
Surah an-Nisa' 4:19Sahih al-Bukhari 676
7May a wife work? Does she need her husband's permission?
A wife may work in lawful employment, and according to the Shafi'i school she needs her husband's permission because leaving the home involves the husband's right.
The general conditions are that the work is lawful, preserves modesty and etiquette, is safe, and does not seriously neglect responsibilities to the home and children. The husband should not prevent it without a reasonable cause, especially if the family needs that income. The couple may also make permission to work a condition agreed before or at the akad. The wife's income remains hers. See Rights of husband & wife and Maintenance.

Difference between schools. The Hanbali school enforces conditions in the contract more strongly (for example a condition that she may work); if the husband breaches it, the wife has the right to choose judicial dissolution (fasakh).
Surah an-Nisa' 4:32Surah an-Nisa' 4:34Sahih al-Bukhari 893
8To what extent must a wife obey her husband?
A wife must obey her husband in what is right relating to marital rights, but not in sin or in what causes harm.
The Prophet ﷺ said there is no obedience in sin; obedience is only in what is right. So a wife may not follow instructions to abandon prayer, uncover her ʿawrah in public, cut family ties or do what is forbidden. Obedience also does not mean the wife may not hold opinions; the Prophet's ﷺ own wives discussed matters with him and gave him their views. The husband in turn must lead justly and consult. See Rights of husband & wife.

9Is a wife sinful for refusing her husband's invitation to intimacy?
A wife is sinful if she refuses without a Shariah-recognised excuse, but not sinful if she has a reasonable excuse.
The Prophet ﷺ said that if a husband calls his wife to bed and she refuses without reason so that he sleeps angry, the angels curse her (Sahih al-Bukhari 5193; Sahih Muslim, Kitab an-Nikah). Scholars understand this hadith in the context of there being no reason. Accepted excuses include menstruation and postnatal bleeding, illness, severe exhaustion, an obligatory fast during the day, depression or trauma, and physical or emotional harm.
Intimacy is a shared right, not a one-sided right — the Qur'an describes husband and wife as "garments" for one another (2:187) and commands living together in kindness (4:19). The husband is required to be gentle, understand his wife's condition and not force her. If refusals happen often, discuss the cause, including health or emotional issues, and seek advice. See Marital Etiquette.

10A husband neglects intimate maintenance — what is the ruling and what can the wife do?
A husband who deliberately neglects his wife's intimate needs (nafkah batin) without excuse has neglected her right and must repent and make amends.
The Prophet ﷺ reminded that a wife has rights over her husband, and the Qur'an limits an oath to abstain from one's wife (ila') to four months only. The wife is encouraged to speak frankly and kindly, get a medical check-up if there is a physical problem, and seek counselling. If it persists and causes harm, the wife may go to the Syariah Court; the absence of nafkah batin for a certain period can be a ground for fasakh under the state Enactment. See Etiquette between husband and wife.

Difference among the schools. Shafi'i: as a matter of court ruling the husband is obliged only once in the marriage, but religiously he is required to meet his wife's needs. Hanbali: obligatory at least once every four months. Maliki: obligatory to the extent of removing harm to the wife.
Surah al-Baqarah 2:226Surah an-Nisa' 4:19Sahih al-Bukhari 1975 (the hadith 'your wife has a right over you')
11A husband works far away or abroad — how long may he leave his wife?
There is no fixed limit in the texts, but many scholars take a guideline of around four to six months, and anything longer requires the wife's consent.
This guideline is drawn from the four-month limit of ila' in the Qur'an and the practice of Caliph Umar, who is reported to have limited how long soldiers could be away from their wives. Material maintenance remains obligatory throughout the husband's absence. The couple should discuss and agree on the length of absence, regular contact and the wife's safety. If the husband's long absence causes harm and maintenance stops, the wife may refer to the Syariah Court. See Rights of husband & wife.

Difference of madhhab. The Hanbalis explicitly allow a wife to seek fasakh if her husband travels for more than six months without excuse and refuses to return when asked; other schools view it in terms of harm and maintenance.
Surah al-Baqarah 2:226Surah an-Nisa' 4:19
12Must a husband provide a home of their own for his wife?
Yes, a husband must provide suitable accommodation and privacy for his wife, at the very least a space of her own that is not shared with others.
Allah commands that wives be housed where the husband lives, according to his means. The home need not be owned; a rented house or a room with separate facilities is enough, provided it is safe, suits local custom ('urf) and gives privacy. A wife may refuse to live with in-laws or other family members where this causes harm or loss of privacy. In polygyny, each wife is entitled to separate accommodation. See Maintenance.

Surah at-Talaq 65:6Surah at-Talaq 65:7
13May a husband force his wife to live in the same house as his parents?
The husband cannot force her if she does not get proper space and privacy, but living with the in-laws is allowed if the wife agrees or her rights are protected.
The wife's right is to accommodation that gives her privacy and security. If the husband's family home provides her own room and facilities without harm, many scholars consider it sufficient. If there is pressure, conflict, or non-mahram brothers-in-law are often around, the wife is entitled to ask for separate accommodation. The husband must also balance his duty to his parents with his wife's rights. Discussing it early, before marriage, helps a great deal. See Rights of husband & wife.

14Must a wife serve and look after her parents-in-law?
In terms of fiqh, caring for parents-in-law is not the wife's obligation, but being good to them is a noble trait that is strongly encouraged.
The duty of devotion to and support of parents in need lies on their child, that is, the husband. But parents-in-law are mahram and part of the wife's family; treating them well pleases the husband and strengthens family ties. The husband should not burden his wife with full-time care without her agreement or help. Care for the elderly is best shared with the husband's siblings. See Rights of husband & wife.

15Should a husband put his mother or his wife first?
Both have different rights that must be fulfilled: the mother is entitled to devotion and respect, the wife to maintenance (nafkah) and good treatment.
Devotion to one's parents is a great command of Allah, but it does not permit a husband to wrong his wife. In matters of maintenance, the Shafi'i school gives the wife's maintenance priority over that of relatives, because it is a right arising from marriage that does not depend on need. In matters of obedience and respect, the husband remains obliged to treat his mother well. What is required is balance, not choosing one over the other. See Rights of husband & wife.

Surah al-Isra' 17:23-24Surah an-Nisa' 4:19Sahih Muslim, Kitab az-Zakah
16A wife wants to visit her parents' home — does she need her husband's permission?
According to the Shafi'i school, a wife needs her husband's permission to leave the house, including to visit her parents, but the husband should not prevent it without reasonable cause.
Maintaining ties with parents is obligatory and cutting them is a major sin. So a husband who prevents his wife from visiting her parents without a Shariah-recognised reason has acted wrongly. If the parents are gravely ill or in need, many scholars hold that the wife may go even if the husband refuses. The best practice is early agreement on a visiting schedule and sharing Hari Raya turns fairly. See Rights of husband & wife.

Surah an-Nisa' 4:1Surah Muhammad 47:22-23Surah an-Nisa' 4:19
17Is a brother-in-law a mahram or not?
No; a brother-in-law is not a mahram for the wife, so modesty (ʿawrah) and the limits of interaction must still be observed.
The Prophet ﷺ gave a stern warning about in-laws, saying that the in-law is death, because his close position in the family makes temptation easier. A wife may not be alone (khalwat) with her brother-in-law and must cover her ʿawrah in front of him. The same applies to a husband with his sisters-in-law. This matters when living in the same house as the extended family. See Mahram.

18How long after childbirth may one be intimate with one's wife?
The ruling on postnatal bleeding is the same as menstruation: intercourse is forbidden until the postnatal bleeding stops and the wife takes the obligatory bath.
There is no minimum period of postnatal bleeding; if the bleeding stops early and the wife bathes, intercourse is legally permitted. However, a doctor's advice on recovery of the womb, stitches and the wife's emotional health must also be taken into account, because Islam forbids harming oneself. Many doctors advise waiting around six weeks or until the postnatal check-up. Also discuss family planning before resuming intimacy. See Marital etiquette.

Difference between schools. Maximum period of postnatal bleeding: 60 days for the Shafi'is and Malikis, 40 days for the Hanafis and Hanbalis. Bleeding beyond that period is considered irregular bleeding (istihadah).
Surah al-Baqarah 2:222Surah al-Baqarah 2:195
19What is the ruling on anal intercourse between husband and wife?
It is forbidden; anal intercourse is strictly prohibited even with one's own wife and even with consent.
The Qur'an likens the wife to a tilth, a place for sowing seed, and permits the husband to approach her from any direction provided it is in the right place (the vagina). The occasion of this verse's revelation is explained in sahih hadith. There are also hadith cursing the act of approaching one's wife in her anus. Besides the sin, it can harm health. The wife has the right to refuse and is not sinful in refusing. See Marital etiquette.

20What are the etiquette and supplication before being intimate with one's wife?
It is recommended to recite the supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ, to begin with affection, and to maintain cleanliness and privacy.
The supplication: Bismillah, Allahumma jannibnasy-syaitan wa jannibisy-syaitana ma razaqtana (In the name of Allah, O Allah, keep Satan away from us and keep Satan away from what You provide us). Other etiquette includes a good intention to preserve chastity and to have offspring, being affectionate first, considering your spouse's feelings, being in a private place, and performing wudu' if you wish to repeat. See Marital etiquette.

21May husband and wife look at each other's ʿawrah?
Yes; there is no ʿawrah between husband and wife, and looking at the whole of one's spouse's body is lawful.
The Prophet ﷺ said: guard your ʿawrah except from your wife or those your right hand possesses. Aishah r.a. also narrated that she bathed with the Prophet ﷺ from a single vessel. Even so, modesty and decency are still encouraged, and the couple should respect each other's comfort. The limit is not exposing one's ʿawrah or intimate matters to others, including through photos or videos. See Etiquette between husband and wife.

22Is it true that intimacy with one's wife is recommended on Thursday night?
No authentic hadith specifically commands intimacy on the night before Friday; it is only an interpretation of some scholars.
This view comes from a hadith about the virtue of bathing on Friday, which some scholars interpreted as an allusion to marital relations. But it is an interpretation, not a clear command. Likewise, the claim that intimacy on certain nights causes children to be born with defects has no authentic basis. The principle is that lawful relations are permitted at any time except during menstruation, nifas, the daytime of an obligatory fast, ihram and iʿtikaf. See Etiquette between husband and wife.

23May a husband force his wife into intimacy even when she is ill or unwilling?
No; forcing her with violence or while she is unwell contradicts the command to live together in kindness, and may even be a criminal offence.
The Qur'an describes husband and wife as garments for one another and calls for love and compassion. A wife who is ill or has a valid excuse commits no sin in refusing. In Malaysia, the Penal Code (s.375A) makes it an offence for a husband to hurt his wife, or to put her in fear through threats, in order to have intercourse with her. A wife who suffers violence can obtain a protection order and counselling support. See Counselling and Etiquette between husband and wife.

24What is the ruling on family planning or taking contraceptive pills?
Family planning by temporary methods such as the pill, injections or an IUD is permissible, with mutual consent and without harm.
Its basis is the practice of ʿazl in the Prophet's ﷺ time, which was not forbidden. Accepted purposes include spacing births, protecting the mother's health and ensuring children can be raised well. But it must not be driven solely by fear of poverty or by an absolute rejection of offspring. Seek a doctor's advice to choose a safe method. Also refer to your state's fatwa. See Fertility & IVF.

25What is the ruling on ʿazl (withdrawal)? Is the wife's permission needed?
ʿAzl is permitted, but preferably with the wife's agreement, because the wife also has a right to offspring and to satisfaction.
Jabir r.a. said: we practised ʿazl while the Qur'an was still being revealed, and the Prophet ﷺ did not forbid it. Difference between schools. Hanafi and Hanbali: the permission of a free wife is required. Maliki: the wife's permission is needed. Shafi'i (the sounder view): permissible without permission but disliked.

26What is the ruling on tubal ligation or vasectomy?
Permanent sterilisation such as tubal ligation or vasectomy is in principle forbidden, except for a medical need confirmed by a specialist doctor.
This is because it permanently removes the capacity for offspring without need, whereas preserving lineage is among the objectives of the Shariah. Permitted situations include when a further pregnancy could endanger the mother's life or health, based on medical confirmation. The decision should be made jointly by husband and wife. Refer to your state's fatwa and a religious officer if you are in this situation. See Fertility & IVF.

27What is the ruling on IVF in Islam?
IVF is permissible if it uses the husband's sperm and the lawful wife's ovum, and the embryo is placed in that same wife's womb while the marriage still subsists.
This is the position of the national fatwa and of most fatwa bodies in the Muslim world. It is forbidden if it involves a third party, such as a sperm donor, an egg donor or another woman's womb, because it mixes lineage. The procedure may also not be carried out after divorce or the husband's death. Choose a medical centre that follows Shariah guidelines. See Fertility & IVF.

28Is surrogacy permitted in Islam?
No; using another woman's womb to carry the couple's embryo is forbidden according to the national fatwa and the majority of contemporary scholars.
It confuses lineage and creates disputes over who the real mother is, whereas the Qur'an links motherhood to the woman who gives birth. Even if the embryo is from a lawfully married couple, placing it in another woman's womb brings a third party into what is lawful only between husband and wife. Couples facing womb problems can seek other treatment and the advice of a religious officer. See Fertility & IVF.

29Married a long time but no children — whose fault is it?
No one should be blamed; children are a gift from Allah, and fertility problems can occur in men or women.
Allah says that He grants daughters, sons, or both to whom He wills, and makes barren whom He wills. The practical step is a joint fertility check-up at a clinic, because male causes are also common. Keep making du'a, including the du'a of Prophet Zakariya. Avoid blaming the wife or pressure from family. If a wish for polygyny arises for the sake of children, it must be discussed honestly with the wife, after joint treatment has been tried, and with care for the wife's feelings and rights. See Fertility & IVF and Counselling.

30Should a husband help with housework and childcare?
Yes, helping with housework is a sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and a sign of a husband's good character.
Aishah r.a. was asked what the Prophet ﷺ did at home, and she answered that he was always helping his family; when the time for prayer came, he would go out to pray. He also sewed his own clothes and mended his own sandals. The Prophet ﷺ said the best of people are those who are best to their families. All the more so when the wife also works, a fair division of tasks is what kindness requires. See Rights of husband & wife.

31Must the husband bear his wife's medical and childbirth costs?
According to practice and the view of contemporary scholars, basic medical and childbirth costs should be borne by the husband as part of maintenance, although classical scholars differed.
Classical Shafi'i scholars did not include medicine and doctors' fees in obligatory maintenance. However, many contemporary scholars hold that medical care is now a basic need according to custom (uruf), especially childbirth costs. Maintenance is also measured by the husband's means. Consider family insurance or takaful to lighten the burden. See Maintenance (nafkah) and Rights of husband & wife.

32Is a wife sinful for leaving the house without her husband's permission?
According to the Shafi'i school, a wife needs her husband's permission to leave the house, except in an emergency or a Shariah-recognised need.
Permitted needs include obtaining emergency treatment, escaping danger, seeking personal religious obligation (fardu ain) knowledge that the husband does not teach, or going to court to claim her rights. Permission need not be asked every time; general permission, such as for going to work or shopping, is enough. The husband in turn may not prevent her without reasonable cause. The Prophet ﷺ also forbade husbands from preventing their wives from going to the mosque. See Rights of husband & wife.

33The wife has a large salary — must the husband still provide maintenance?
Yes, a wife's maintenance remains obligatory on the husband even if she is wealthy or earns more.
The duty of maintenance arises from marriage, not from the wife being poor. Allah places the responsibility of providing maintenance on men as part of their leadership. A wife may voluntarily waive part of her right or help her husband, but that is her choice and kindness, not an obligation. Maintenance given by a husband also counts as charity and earns reward, even the morsel he places in his wife's mouth. See Maintenance (nafkah).

34Does a wife's maintenance lapse if she is nushuz?
Yes, according to the Shafi'i school and the majority, a wife's maintenance lapses for as long as her nushuz (marital defiance) is established, and resumes when she becomes obedient again.
Nushuz means a wife's defiance of her husband's rights without a valid Shariah reason, such as leaving home without cause or refusing to live together. Refusal because she is being wronged, is not given maintenance or her safety is threatened is not nushuz. Child maintenance does not lapse. A disputed finding of nushuz is made by the Syariah Court, not by one party's claim. See Nushuz & conflict and Counselling.

35Is foreplay before intimacy encouraged in Islam?
Yes, affection and playfulness before intimacy are encouraged so that both spouses are ready and experience happiness.
The Prophet ﷺ asked Jabir r.a. why he had not married a young maiden so that they could play and be affectionate with one another. Intimacy is worship when done with a good intention, and the Qur'an reminds husbands to 'send forth' good for themselves. The husband must also ensure his wife reaches satisfaction too, as that is part of intimate maintenance and care. See Marital etiquette.

36A wife wants to continue her studies, perhaps far from home. Does she need her husband's permission, and is maintenance still due?
She should discuss it and gain her husband's agreement because it changes the household arrangements; if he agrees, maintenance remains his obligation.
Seeking knowledge is highly honoured, and Allah raises in rank those who have knowledge (al-Mujadilah 58:11). Yet decisions affecting the home, the children and time together should be made by consultation (ash-Shura 42:38). In the Shafi'i school, maintenance can lapse if a wife leaves and lives apart without permission, but not if she goes with her husband's agreement. Things to agree on: the length of study, who looks after the children, how often she returns or he visits, the cost of study (it is not obligatory maintenance, but he may help), and the safety of her accommodation. For study abroad, consider the questions of mahram and distance. See Rights of husband & wife.

37The husband wants many children; the wife wants to delay or limit them. Who has the right to decide?
Decisions about children are a shared right; they must be negotiated, because offspring are the right of both and it is the wife who carries the pregnancy.
The Quran describes matters concerning a child, such as weaning, being decided by mutual consent and consultation between husband and wife (al-Baqarah 2:233). Shafi'i scholars state that coitus interruptus (ʿazl) with a free wife should be with her permission because offspring are her right too; the same principle applies the other way. Planning the spacing of births for the mother's health and the ability to raise children is permitted, unlike refusing children altogether without reason. Consider the wife's health (for instance after a caesarean), finances, and the ability to give each child attention. Ask a doctor about safe methods. If you cannot agree, a counsellor can help. See the question on family planning.

38A spouse is addicted to pornography. What does it do to the marriage, and what can be done?
Pornography is forbidden, and addiction to it often damages intimacy, trust and the other spouse's self-esteem; it can be treated if acknowledged and tackled with help.
Allah commands lowering the gaze and guarding one's private parts (an-Nur 24:30–31), and the Prophet ﷺ said that the zina of the eyes is the gaze (Sahih al-Bukhari 6243). Commonly reported effects: unrealistic sexual expectations, less interest in one's spouse, comparison and secrecy. For the spouse who discovers it: it is not your fault, and you are entitled to feel hurt. For the one addicted: repent, admit it to your spouse, install filters and move devices to shared spaces, identify triggers such as loneliness or stress, and see a counsellor or specialist experienced in addiction. If it involves children, it is a serious crime and must be reported. See Managing impulses and Counselling.

39May a husband and wife be intimate while the wife is pregnant?
Yes; there is no Shariah prohibition, as long as it does not harm the mother or the baby according to medical advice.
Allah permits marital relations in a good way (al-Baqarah 2:187, 2:223), and no text excludes the period of pregnancy. In a narration of Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ once considered forbidding intercourse with a breastfeeding wife (ghilah), but did not forbid it after seeing that the Romans and Persians did so without harming their children (Sahih Muslim, Kitab an-Nikah) — showing the principle is avoiding real harm. A doctor may advise abstaining in certain situations such as bleeding, a low-lying placenta, risk of premature labour or after a procedure. A husband should be sensitive to his wife's comfort and emotional changes; intimacy is not limited to intercourse alone. See Etiquette between spouses.

40Some say intimacy with a breastfeeding wife spoils the milk or harms the baby. Is that true?
No; the Prophet ﷺ considered this matter and did not forbid it, because it does not harm the child.
In a narration of Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said he had intended to forbid ghilah (intercourse with a breastfeeding wife), then found that the Romans and Persians did it and it did not harm their children (Sahih Muslim, Kitab an-Nikah). So intimacy during the breastfeeding period is permitted once postnatal bleeding has ended. The real concerns are usually the mother's exhaustion, hormonal changes that reduce desire, or becoming pregnant again too soon; breastfeeding does not necessarily prevent pregnancy. Discuss suitable birth-spacing methods with a doctor, and give the wife rest and help with the baby. See the question on intimacy after childbirth.

41May a wife be treated, or give birth, with a male doctor?
A female doctor is preferred if available and of equal expertise; if not, or in an emergency, treatment by a male doctor is permitted out of necessity and need, uncovering the aurat only as much as required.
A principle of fiqh holds that need can make permissible what is originally forbidden, based on Allah not wishing hardship (al-Baqarah 2:185) and the prohibition on harming oneself (al-Baqarah 2:195). Women Companions also treated wounded men in battle alongside the Prophet ﷺ. Practical steps: ask for a female doctor or nurse where possible; ask for a female nurse or the husband to be present during examinations; and do not delay necessary treatment simply because no female doctor is available. A husband should not prevent his wife from getting life-saving treatment on these grounds. See Modesty & boundaries.

42A wife wants to spend her postnatal confinement at her parents' home. For how long, and who pays?
It is permitted with the husband's agreement and is usually very helpful; the length and costs should be agreed in advance, and the costs of the wife's and baby's needs remain the husband's responsibility.
Maintenance, including needs after childbirth, is obligatory on the husband according to his means (al-Baqarah 2:233, at-Talaq 65:7). The wife's parents who look after their daughter during confinement are doing a kindness; the husband should contribute to household costs, confinement food and help such as a masseuse or helper, and visit often or stay with them if possible. The usual period in Malay society is about forty-four days, but the Shariah does not fix it; postnatal bleeding ends when the blood stops. Avoid harmful taboos such as cutting down on drinking water. If the husband has more than one wife, his rota is rearranged fairly during this period. See the question on childbirth costs.

43A husband spends much of his time on hobbies, friends or his phone. Does his wife have a right to his time?
Yes. Living with one's wife in kindness includes giving time and attention, not merely maintenance; the same applies the other way round.
The Prophet ﷺ corrected ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr r.a., who worshipped so much that he neglected his family, saying: your wife has a right over you (Sahih al-Bukhari 1975). If even voluntary worship may not take away a wife's right, hobbies and phones all the more need balancing. Allah commands husbands to live with their wives in kindness (an-Nisa' 4:19). Hobbies are not wrong; the problem is when the wife and children get only the leftover time and energy. Agree on a schedule: phone-free evenings, one weekend day for the family, and hobbies at agreed times. A wife absorbed in social media is bound by the same principle. See Digital life & the family.

44A husband is transferring to a job in another state. Must his wife move with him?
According to the Shafi'i school, a wife in principle follows the residence her husband provides if it is safe and suitable; yet conditions agreed at the contract, the wife's own circumstances and any harm must be taken into account.
Allah commands husbands to house their wives where they live, according to their means (at-Talaq 65:6), and life together is the purpose of marriage (ar-Rum 30:21). If the wife works, cares for frail parents, or a child is facing a major exam, the decision should be made by consultation and may be delayed or phased. If the wife refuses without good reason, it may affect her right to maintenance; but a husband may not force a move to an unsafe place or use it to cut his wife off from her family. Either may seek advice from the religious office. See Rights of husband & wife.

45May a wife let guests into the house when her husband is away?
A wife does not admit anyone her husband dislikes into the home without his permission; usual visitors such as close family and female friends are generally covered by his general permission.
The Prophet ﷺ said that a wife should not let anyone into her husband's house except with his permission (Sahih al-Bukhari 5195). Scholars explain that this permission can be general, according to custom: the wife's parents, siblings and known female friends do not need permission each time. What should be avoided is admitting non-mahram men while the wife is alone, because of the prohibition on being alone together (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233). Repairmen or delivery staff are better dealt with at the door, or when someone else is at home. The same principle applies to the husband: respecting his wife's feelings about whom he brings home. See Modesty & boundaries.

46A husband smokes indoors even though his wife is pregnant and there are young children. What rights does she have?
She is entitled to ask him not to smoke inside the house or near the family, because cigarette smoke harms others and Islam forbids harming others.
The Prophet ﷺ ruled that there is to be no harming of oneself or of others (Sunan Ibn Majah 2340), and the National Fatwa Committee Muzakarah has ruled smoking forbidden because of its harm. Second-hand smoke is dangerous to an unborn baby, infants and children. Practical steps: agree on a smoke-free home and car; encourage him to use the quit-smoking service at a health clinic; and praise every effort. Avoid constant nagging, but do not compromise on the children's safety. The husband should also recognise that protecting his family from harm is his trust (at-Tahrim 66:6). See the question on smoking and vaping.

47A husband asks his wife to wear a face veil (niqab). Must she comply?
Covering the face is not obligatory according to the relied-upon view of the Shafi'i school in normal circumstances; a husband's request in a permissible matter deserves consideration, but it should be negotiated, not forced.
Allah commands women to cover their aurat and draw their headscarves over their chests (an-Nur 24:31) and to lengthen their outer garments (al-Ahzab 33:59). Scholars differ on the face: many Shafi'i scholars consider the face and palms not to be aurat before non-mahram men, while others require or recommend covering them. Obedience to a husband applies in what is reasonable, and a wife who chooses to wear the niqab at her husband's request does a good thing. Yet consider her work, safety, identification requirements and comfort. Compulsion through threats does not fit with living together in kindness (an-Nisa' 4:19). See Modesty & boundaries.

48May a wife exercise at a gym or take part in sports?
Yes, and looking after one's health is encouraged; the conditions are that the aurat is covered, the place and activity are suitable, and it is discussed with the husband.
The Prophet ﷺ himself raced ʿAisha r.a. (Sunan Abu Dawud 2578), showing that physical activity by women is nothing strange. The body also has a right over its owner (Sahih al-Bukhari 1975). Guidance: choose a women-only gym or women-only hours if available; wear sportswear that covers the aurat and is not so tight that it shows the body's shape; avoid male personal trainers who need physical contact; and be careful about recording or posting workout videos. Exercising at home, walking with one's husband or family sports are also good options. A husband who supports his wife's health is also caring for his trust. See Modesty & boundaries.
The Prophet ﷺ himself raced ʿAisha r.a. (Sunan Abu Dawud 2578), showing that physical activity by women is nothing strange. The body also has a right over its owner (Sahih al-Bukhari 1975). 49A wife's job requires her to travel out of town or abroad without her husband. What is the ruling?
According to the Shafi'i school, a woman does not travel long distances without her husband or a mahram, except in circumstances some Shafi'i scholars permit, namely an obligatory journey with trustworthy female companions in safe conditions; for work, many contemporary scholars allow some leeway where safety is assured.
The Prophet ﷺ said that a woman should not travel except with a mahram (Sahih al-Bukhari 1862). Scholars understand the purpose of the prohibition as safety and dignity, so they discuss circumstances such as a group of trustworthy women, safe transport and secure accommodation. If work often requires travel, discuss it with your husband and employer: limit trips, travel in groups, or have your husband accompany you when possible. The husband's permission is also needed as it involves time apart. Ask the religious office about specific situations. See Mahram.

50Intimacy on the wedding night or early in the marriage is difficult and painful. What should be done?
This is more common than people think; do not rush, talk gently, and if pain or difficulty continues, see a doctor, because it can be treated.
Allah describes husband and wife as garments for one another (al-Baqarah 2:187) and tells us to send forth good for ourselves (al-Baqarah 2:223), which scholars understand to include affection before intimacy. Pressure to "succeed" on the first night, anxiety, lack of knowledge or medical conditions such as vaginismus or erectile difficulties can cause problems. In practice: take days if needed; avoid any pressure; use a lubricant if needed; and seek treatment from a family doctor, gynaecologist or urologist. It is no shame to tell a doctor. Do not let relatives press for "proof" of the wedding night. See Etiquette between spouses.

51Because of snoring or caring for a baby, a husband and wife sleep in separate rooms. Is that wrong?
It is not wrong if there is a reasonable cause and both agree, as long as the rights of intimacy, affection and communication are still upheld.
No text requires spouses to share a room every night; what is required is living together in kindness (an-Nisa' 4:19) and fulfilling each other's rights. Separating beds as a sanction (hajr) is mentioned only in the context of nusyuz and has its limits (an-Nisa' 4:34), so it is different from a practical arrangement because of snoring, shift work or a baby. Very loud snoring can be a sign of sleep apnoea that needs treatment. Make sure there is regular time together, including before sleep, so separate rooms do not turn into emotional distance. If one of you starts to feel rejected, talk about it at once. See Etiquette between spouses.

52A wife has a long illness and cannot be intimate with her husband. What are each spouse's rights and responsibilities?
A sick wife commits no sin in being unable, and her maintenance remains obligatory; the husband is asked to be patient, to care for her and to find a lawful way for his own needs without neglecting her.
Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity (al-Baqarah 2:286), and the Prophet ﷺ promised great reward to those who care for the sick. Intimacy can continue in whatever form she is able for and that does not harm her, following medical advice. If the husband feels unable to restrain himself, the Shariah allows a just polygamous marriage through the Syariah Court procedure, and the sick wife remains fully entitled to maintenance, treatment and kind treatment; a wife's infirmity as a ground for polygamy is mentioned in state family law, but it does not erase the first wife's rights. Discuss it honestly and seek counselling; do not make decisions in secret. See the question on a sick wife and polygamy.

53A husband has been imprisoned. What happens to the wife's maintenance and rights?
The marriage continues, and the wife's and children's maintenance remains a debt on the husband; if the sentence is three years or more, the wife may apply for fasakh at the Syariah Court.
Act 303 s.52(1)(c) lists a prison sentence of three years or more as a ground for fasakh, while failure to provide maintenance for three months is a separate ground (s.52(1)(b)). If the husband has property or income, the court may order maintenance to be paid from it. The wife is not obliged to divorce; many choose to wait and support their husbands. Meanwhile, seek help from the zakat centre, the Social Welfare Department and family. Explain to the children honestly according to their age, and consider visits if safe and suitable. See Abandoned by one's husband and Zakat & welfare.

54Until what age may children sleep in the same bed or room as their parents?
There is no exact age for sharing a room, but the hadith sets separating children's beds at the age of ten, and the couple's privacy should be protected earlier.
The Prophet ﷺ said: instruct children to pray at seven, be firm with them about it at ten, and separate their beds (Sunan Abu Dawud 495). The Quran also teaches children to ask permission at the three times of privacy before entering their parents' room (an-Nur 24:58). Babies and young children sleeping near their parents is normal and makes care easier. Gradually move the child to their own bed, then their own room if the house allows, and separate boys and girls. Private space for husband and wife is important for intimacy and the health of the marriage. See the question on asking permission to enter.

55The children have grown up and left home. How can husband and wife revive their relationship?
The "empty nest" stage is a chance to get to know one's spouse again; a relationship long centred on the children needs to be rebuilt deliberately.
Allah created spouses so that we find tranquillity, and placed between them affection and mercy (ar-Rum 30:21) — scholars note that mercy becomes more prominent with age. The Prophet ﷺ still joked and raced with ʿAisha r.a. years after the first time (Sunan Abu Dawud 2578). Suggestions: start new routines together such as morning walks, religious classes or a shared hobby; plan an umrah or a holiday; talk about postponed dreams; and look after your health together. Hormonal changes, menopause or men's health problems can affect intimacy; talk to a doctor. If emotional distance has lasted long, a counsellor can help. See Emotional communication.

56A wife is a convert (mualaf). How can her relationship with her non-Muslim family of origin be kept up?
Islam requires kindness and devotion to parents even if they are not Muslim, as long as one is not told to do wrong; her husband should support that relationship.
Allah says of non-Muslim parents: do not obey them in associating partners with Allah, but keep company with them in this world kindly (Luqman 31:15), and Allah does not forbid kindness and fairness towards non-Muslims who do not fight us (al-Mumtahanah 60:8). Asma' bint Abi Bakr r.a. asked the Prophet ﷺ about her non-Muslim mother who came to visit her, and he told her to keep ties with her (Sahih al-Bukhari 2620). In practice: visit at family celebrations without joining religious rites; politely bring your own halal food; and let the children know their grandparents. A husband must not cut his wife off from her family. See Interfaith matters.

57The wife works full time while the husband looks after the home and children. Is this arrangement allowed?
It is allowed if both agree and each one's rights are protected; yet the legal duty of maintenance remains the husband's, and the wife's contribution is her kindness, not a transfer of the obligation.
Allah describes men as maintainers because of what they spend from their wealth (an-Nisa' 4:34), and sets maintenance according to means (at-Talaq 65:7). If the husband cannot work or circumstances require it, the wife may spend her wealth willingly, and she earns the reward of kinship and charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 1466). A husband who cares for the children and home does noble work, as the Prophet ﷺ helped his family (Sahih al-Bukhari 676). Things to make clear: whether the wife's money is a gift or a loan, how jointly acquired property is treated, and how to protect both spouses' dignity from family remarks. See Family finances.

58A husband often goes away for months for preaching or religious programmes. What about his wife's rights?
Preaching is noble, but it must not neglect the rights of wife and children; its duration, the maintenance left behind and the wife's agreement must be arranged.
The Prophet ﷺ corrected ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr r.a., who was overzealous in worship, saying that your wife, your guests and your own self have a right over you (Sahih al-Bukhari 1975, 5199). Scholars take the four-month period in the verse of ilaʾ (al-Baqarah 2:226) as a guide to the longest a husband should be away without his wife's consent. Before leaving: make sure enough maintenance is left, the home is safe, someone can help, and the wife truly agrees rather than feels forced. Neglecting maintenance or marital relations over a long period can be grounds for fasakh (Act 303 s.52). The best preaching begins at home (at-Tahrim 66:6). See the question on a husband working far away.

59What is the ruling on celebrating a wedding anniversary?
It is permitted as a custom and a way of showing appreciation for one's spouse, as long as it is not treated as a special act of worship, is not wasteful and involves nothing forbidden.
The basic ruling on customs and worldly matters is permissibility unless there is a prohibition, and Islam encourages appreciating one's spouse and recalling Allah's blessings (ad-Duha 93:11). The Prophet ﷺ accepted and returned gifts (Sahih al-Bukhari 2585), and exchanging gifts between spouses increases love. What should be avoided is treating it as sunnah or obligatory, spending beyond one's means, or making it a show on social media. Meaningful ways: a meal together, a letter of appreciation, charity in the family's name, praying together for the marriage. In polygamy, take care that a celebration for one wife does not hurt the other. See Emotional communication.

60There is a driver, gardener or male worker at the house. How should a wife keep her aurat and boundaries?
Male workers are not mahram, so the wife covers her aurat in front of them and avoids being alone with them, including in the car.
Allah commands women not to display their adornment except to the mahram listed (an-Nur 24:31), and the Prophet ﷺ forbade a man to be alone with a non-mahram woman (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233). A driver who regularly takes the wife out alone falls into a situation of seclusion (khalwah) that should be avoided; bring a child or a female helper, or use other transport. Arrange the worker's area outside private spaces, and do not hand over bedroom keys. Set up professional communication through the husband where possible. Treat workers fairly and respectfully, as the Prophet ﷺ taught (Sahih al-Bukhari 30). See Modesty & boundaries.

61A spouse has an infectious illness such as HIV or hepatitis B. What about marital relations?
The infected spouse must be open about it, and relations can continue with preventive measures on medical advice; the healthy spouse also has the right to choose, including applying for fasakh where the conditions are met.
Islam forbids harming others (Sunan Ibn Majah 2340), and hiding an illness that can be passed to one's spouse is a wrong. Today antiretroviral treatment and the hepatitis B vaccine greatly reduce the risk of transmission; a doctor can advise on medication, condoms, vaccination and safe pregnancy planning. Act 303 s.52(1)(f) lists a venereal disease in a communicable form among the grounds for fasakh. Treat a sick spouse with compassion, not stigma; many patients live long and healthy lives with treatment. See the question on disclosing illness.

62Husband and wife work different shifts and rarely see each other. How can they keep their relationship strong?
Plan time together deliberately, because a relationship that only meets in the doorway slowly drifts apart.
The Prophet ﷺ stated clearly that one's spouse has rights over one (Sahih al-Bukhari 1975), and Allah made spouses a source of tranquillity (ar-Rum 30:21) — something not achieved without time together. Suggestions: set one protected day a week for the two of you or the family; eat together at least once a day if possible; use notes, voice messages and short calls; divide housework and childcare clearly to avoid misunderstandings; and review regularly whether the shift arrangement is still reasonable. If fatigue is affecting health or emotions, consider a change of work in the long term. In polygamy, shifts also affect how the rota is counted. See the question on shifts and the rota.

63May a wife use her husband's name, for example being called "Mrs Ahmad" or changing her surname?
Courtesy titles such as "Mrs Ahmad" or "Ahmad's wife" are permitted as titles; what is forbidden is changing lineage so that a person is attributed to someone other than her father.
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever claims to be the child of someone other than his father, knowingly, Paradise is forbidden to him (Sahih al-Bukhari 6766), and Allah commands calling people by their fathers' names (al-Ahzab 33:5). So a Muslim woman's official name in Malaysia remains "binti" her father, which also protects her identity after divorce or death. A social title showing a marriage is not a change of lineage, just as the Prophet's ﷺ wives were known as his wives. For women living abroad where taking the husband's surname is the norm, it can be discussed with local scholars without denying one's true lineage. See Custody & lineage.

64Our relationship has become dull after years of marriage. How can we bring it back to life?
Dullness is usually not a sign that love has died but that the relationship is no longer being tended; warmth returns when both deliberately invest time, words and touch.
The Prophet ﷺ joked with, raced and showed love to his wives (Sunan Abu Dawud 2578), and told us to express our love (Sunan Abu Dawud 5124). Allah describes spouses as garments for one another (al-Baqarah 2:187). Suggestions: talk daily about things other than the children and bills; go out together regularly; say thank you and give compliments; dress up for each other; try new activities together; and talk openly about intimacy. If there are old wounds or buried anger, resolve them first, because intimacy struggles to grow on resentment. A marriage counsellor can help. See Emotional communication.

65May a wife wear attractive or alluring clothing for her husband at home?
Yes; adorning oneself for one's spouse in private is a good and permitted thing; the limit is that no one else sees it.
Allah permits fine adornment (al-A'raf 7:32) and describes husband and wife as garments for one another (al-Baqarah 2:187). Aurat is not a barrier between spouses, so clothing suited only to the bedroom is permitted. Things to take care of: children, helpers and guests should not see it; do not buy it on credit; and the husband should dress up for his wife too. Intimacy is part of worship within marriage, and the Prophet ﷺ said that marital relations themselves earn reward (Sahih Muslim, Kitab az-Zakah). See Etiquette between spouses.

66What are the authentic practices for protecting the home and family from the devil's harm?
The authentic practices are reciting Surah al-Baqarah at home, saying the name of Allah when entering the house and eating, reciting Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls before sleep, and bringing prayer and remembrance into the home.
The Prophet ﷺ said: do not make your houses like graves; the devil flees from a house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited (Sahih Muslim, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin). He also taught reciting Ayat al-Kursi before sleep as protection until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311), and blowing the three Quls into the palms and wiping the body (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). Be wary of amulets, charms or paid "house cleansing" involving practices without sources; they can lead to shirk and fraud. If a family member experiences emotional disturbance or behavioural changes, consult a doctor as well. See Supplication & prayer.

67Is a husband obliged to provide a domestic helper for his wife?
According to the Shafi'i school, if the wife comes from a background where help is customary, or she is ill and unable, a husband with the means must provide help according to custom; if he cannot afford it, it is not obligatory, but he should help himself.
Maintenance is assessed by the husband's means and social custom (at-Talaq 65:7, al-Baqarah 2:233). When Fatima r.a. complained that her hands hurt from grinding grain and asked for a servant, the Prophet ﷺ instead taught her and ʿAli words of remembrance before sleep (Sahih al-Bukhari 3113) — a sign that when means are lacking, spouses help each other and are patient. Today help can take the form of a part-time cleaner, laundry services, household appliances or the husband sharing the work himself. A wife who works and also runs the whole house easily becomes exhausted; discuss realistic forms of help. See the question on a husband helping at home.

Lihat adab harian suami isteri.
109Bagaimana mewujudkan tabiat berbual seketika sebelum tidur setiap malam?
Lihat doa & solat.
Sunan Abu Dawud 1308 (sahih)
111Kami terlalu sibuk pada waktu pagi. Perlukah kami tetap bersarapan bersama?
Tetapkan satu sesi kemas bersama setiap malam selama sepuluh minit supaya tiada seorang berasa dibiarkan keseorangan.
Sangat baik; bergerak bersama menjaga kesihatan badan sekali gus memberi masa berbual tanpa gangguan. Lihat sistem rumah tangga.
Lihat sistem rumah tangga.
119Bagaimana menguruskan perbelanjaan harian bersama supaya tiada rasa curiga?
Ketelusan kecil setiap minggu mengelak pertengkaran besar hujung bulan. Lihat kewangan keluarga.
120Bagaimana suami isteri menyelaras cara mendidik anak melalui perbualan harian?
Lihat mendidik keluarga.
121Media sosial menyita masa malam kami. Bagaimana mengehadkannya demi keluarga?
Lihat keluarga & dunia digital.
Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم mengingatkan bahawa “sesungguhnya tubuhmu ada hak ke atasmu” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5199). Lihat kesihatan mental.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5199
124Waktu solat kami selalu sendiri-sendiri.
Lihat panduan solat berjemaah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 432
Lihat adab harian suami isteri.
126Bagaimana mengajak anak-anak turut berdoa bersama selepas solat?
Lihat mendidik keluarga.
Lihat sistem rumah tangga.
Libatkan anak memilih penerima supaya mereka merasai nikmat memberi. Tabiat memberi menyatukan hati keluarga dan menjauhkan sifat tamak. Lihat kewangan keluarga.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1426
138Bagaimana amalan hidup sederhana setiap hari menjauhkan pertengkaran tentang wang?
Lihat kesihatan mental.
141Bolehkah kami menetapkan matlamat ibadah bersama seperti puasa sunat atau sedekah mingguan?
Menetapkan matlamat ibadah bersama menjadikan anda berdua berpasukan menuju akhirat, bukan hanya berkongsi urusan dunia.
Lihat kewangan keluarga.
143Anak kami sudah remaja dan sibuk sendiri. Bagaimana suami isteri mengekalkan kemesraan harian?
Lihat komunikasi & emosi.
144Bagaimana menjadikan menghubungi ibu bapa kedua belah pihak satu rutin keluarga?
Jadikan menghubungi ibu bapa kedua belah pihak satu rutin tetap supaya silaturahim terjaga tanpa menunggu perayaan.
Lihat adab harian suami isteri.
151Bagaimana menyokong pasangan menjaga berat badan tanpa menyinggung perasaannya?
Lihat sistem rumah tangga.
153Bagaimana membiasakan seisi keluarga bangun untuk solat Subuh bersama?
Bangun untuk Subuh bersama menjadi lebih mudah apabila ia tabiat keluarga, bukan perjuangan seorang diri. Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم bersabda: “Suruhlah anak-anak kamu bersolat ketika mereka berumur tujuh tahun” (Sunan Abu Dawud 495). Lihat panduan solat berjemaah.
Sunan Abu Dawud 495 (sahih)
154Bagaimana membuat semakan rumah tangga sekali setahun tanpa ia bertukar menjadi pertengkaran?
Lihat semak rumah tangga.
