Q&A › Conflict & resolution

🕊️ Conflict & resolution · #113

Every discussion we have quickly heats up. Can we agree on a way to pause?

Agreeing in advance on a signal to pause saves many conversations from turning into arguments. While you are both still calm, choose a word or gesture that means ‘let's stop for a moment before this turns bad’. Agree too that whoever asks for a pause is not running away, and that the discussion will be resumed, not abandoned. Set a time, for example fifteen minutes, so the other person does not feel left hanging. Use the pause to calm down, not to build up anger. A small rule agreed together is easier to respect than one imposed in anger. See communication & emotions.
