Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #100

I am old and have to depend on my children financially. How do I keep my dignity?

Accepting your children's help in old age is no disgrace; it is part of the cycle of love that you began when you raised them. Just as you supported them before, repaying that kindness now is an honour for them, not a shameful burden on you. Accept help with gratitude, and pray for good for them; parents' prayers for their children are of great value. Keep the roles you are still able to carry, such as looking after grandchildren or giving advice, so you still feel useful. Discuss your needs honestly and modestly, without comparing the contributions of your children. Keep relationships good; that is worth more than money. See maintenance of parents.
