💰 Family finances · #75

I want to help my parents financially without affecting the maintenance of my wife and children. How do I balance it?

Honouring one's parents is strongly required, but it does not cancel your obligatory maintenance (nafkah) to your wife and children, which comes first. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught: “begin with those under your care” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1426), and only then widen it to parents and others. Set a fixed, affordable amount for your parents in the budget, so it is orderly and does not disrupt the household's needs. Discuss it openly with your wife so she does not feel neglected. If your parents truly are in need and you are stretched, help them with service and time, not only money. See maintenance.
