Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #277

In every fight I feel my spouse is the one at fault. Should I admit my mistake first?

Almost every conflict has two sides, and admitting your side first often melts your spouse's defences. Start by honestly admitting your part, however small: ‘I admit my tone was raised just now, sorry.’ This admission disarms the fight because your spouse no longer needs to defend themselves. Often they will respond by admitting their part too. Hold back the ego that wants to win completely; the goal is to make up, not to be one hundred percent right. A person who can say ‘I was wrong too’ is respected more, not seen as weak. See communication & emotions.
