What is an Emergency Protection Order (EPO)?
An EPO is an immediate protection order under the Domestic Violence Act 1994 issued by a Social Welfare Officer (JKM) without needing to wait for court proceedings.
It was introduced through an amendment to the Act to protect victims quickly, especially outside office hours or when the victim has not yet made a police report. An EPO is in force for a short period (7 days) and can forbid the abuser from using violence or approaching the victim. After that, the victim can proceed with an IPO or other orders. Contact Talian Kasih 15999 or the district JKM office, and 999 if in immediate danger. See Nushuz & conflict.
