Should we stop and take a break when a quarrel gets heated?
Yes — pausing when emotions peak is in line with the sunnah and very effective in avoiding words you will regret.
Many pronouncements of talaq, threats and insults come out in anger. The Prophet ﷺ taught changing one's position when angry and keeping silent. Agree on a phrase, for example "let's continue after Asr", so that the break does not mean running away. Use that time to make wudu', pray, walk or write down what you really feel. Come back to the discussion within 24 hours; do not let it drag on for more than three days. Spouses should also avoid pronouncing divorce in anger — the consequences are serious and must be referred to the court. See Ways of making up.
