Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #118

A relative of ours is drowning in debt and has asked for help. How far should we help?

Helping a relative who is struggling with debt is a great kindness, as long as it does not harm your own family's basic needs. Assess honestly what you can afford first, and put your dependants first, because the best charity begins “with those under your care” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1426). Help can take the form of an interest-free loan, charity, or helping them draw up a financial plan, not necessarily just cash. Avoid going into debt involving riba (interest) yourself in order to help, because that only moves the problem. Protect your relative's dignity by giving discreetly. If the situation is serious, refer to the baitulmal or the relevant assistance agency. Help for the sake of Allah, without reminding them of it afterwards. See family finances.
