How can I make sure I do not leave a burden of debt to my heirs when I die?

Settling your debts while you are alive is a great trust, because they do not simply disappear at death. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The soul of a believer is suspended by his debt until it is discharged for him” (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1078). Avoid taking on unnecessary debt, and give priority to paying off existing debts on a schedule. Keep a record of all your debts and what others owe you in a place your heirs can find. If you have dependants, consider protection such as takaful so your family is not left struggling. Tell your spouse or heirs about this trust while you are still in good health. Protecting your family from the burden of debt is part of your love for them. See managing the estate.
