Where should I keep my will so that my family knows it exists?

Keep the original will in a safe place, and make sure at least one trusted person knows where it is. A will hidden too carefully is the same as no will at all. Options include handing it to the trust company or lawyer who prepared it, or keeping it at home with other important documents in a labelled file. Keep a copy too, and note where the original is. Tell your spouse or executor that it exists, even if you do not reveal its contents. If you are in a polygynous marriage, make sure this information is not known to only one household, so no wife feels left out when the time comes. See recording assets for your heirs.
