We are celebrating Eid abroad this year. Should zakat fitrah be paid in that country or in Malaysia?
In the Syafi'i school, the basic rule is that zakat fitrah is paid where you are when Ramadan ends. So if there is a trustworthy zakat institution or mosque there, pay through it so that the local poor and needy benefit. Some scholars allow zakat to be transferred elsewhere when there is a need, such as there being no eligible recipients (asnaf) locally or relatives in greater need back home. If you plan to pay it in Malaysia, first ask the state Islamic religious council how to do so. If you pay through a representative in Malaysia, make sure they pay it on time. Pay before the Eid prayer so that you do not miss the best time. See zakat and welfare.
