Our family is going to settle abroad. Which family documents should we keep carefully?

Keep the documents that prove who you are and how family members are related: marriage certificate, children's birth certificates, passports and identity cards. Add the children's immunisation records, important medical records, educational certificates and documents for property or savings in Malaysia. Make printed copies and digital copies stored securely, and give one set to a trusted family member in Malaysia. Husband and wife should both know where the original documents are kept, not just one of them. If a child is born there, ask the Malaysian embassy promptly about registering the birth. Some countries require documents to be translated or certified, so check the requirements early. See cross-border matters.
