We live abroad, and our teenager wants to go back to Malaysia to study at a boarding school. Should we allow it?
It can be a good opportunity, provided the decision comes from the child's readiness, not pressure or a wish to run away from problems. Ask honestly what is driving it: missing the homeland, wanting a stronger religious education, or perhaps a problem at their current school. Visit the school and get to know the warden and teachers. Decide who the local guardian will be when they are sick or on holiday, for example grandparents or an uncle. Set a schedule for keeping in touch and for visits home. Tell your child that they can change their decision if it does not suit them. Parents' love does not diminish with distance. See educating the family.
