Q&A › Region & Middle East

🧭 Region & Middle East · #86

We have returned to Malaysia after years abroad, and the children are finding it hard to adjust. How can we help them?

Acknowledge that for the children this is a move to a new country, even though for you it is coming home. They may miss their friends, school and old way of life, and feel out of place with the language and culture here. Listen to their complaints without immediately correcting them. Help them build one or two friendships, for example through Qur'an classes, sports or neighbours of the same age. Talk with their teachers about language support, especially Bahasa Melayu. Allow them to stay in touch with old friends in a reasonable way. Give it a few months and celebrate small progress. If a child becomes very low or refuses to go to school, get help from the school counsellor. See educating the family.
