Our child was born abroad. Can the aqiqah be done by our family back home in Malaysia?

Yes; the aqiqah can be delegated and the animal slaughtered elsewhere, including in your hometown in Malaysia. What matters is that you, as the parents, make the intention and clearly appoint the person handling it as your representative, and that the slaughter meets the conditions. Discuss the cost and the distribution of the meat with your family back home or a trustworthy organiser. Many families choose this way because the meat can be distributed to relatives and neighbours in need. Where you live, you can still revive other sunnahs for the baby, such as shaving the hair and giving charity. If you are unsure about the details, ask the religious affairs office. See children.
