Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #114

We are married, but my wife is still in her country waiting for approval of a pass to live in Malaysia. What are our rights and responsibilities in the meantime?

You are already lawfully husband and wife, and the basic rights and responsibilities still apply even while you are temporarily apart. The husband should keep providing for his wife as far as he is able, because the delay is caused by the pass process, not by any refusal on her part. Keep in touch every day, and visit your wife if you can. The wife, for her part, guards her dignity and the trust of the household even while apart. Handle the marriage registration and the pass application carefully, and keep copies of all documents. If the wait is very long, ask the Immigration Department about the status of the application and consider whether the husband could stay there for a while. For specific questions about maintenance (nafkah), consult the state Islamic religious affairs office. See a marriage not yet consummated (nikah gantung).
