Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #81

My father has passed away and I will be the wali for my younger sister. What do I need to know?

Make sure you are eligible, understand the wording of the offer (ijab), and most importantly, that your sister is truly willing. A wali must be Muslim, of age, of sound mind and, according to the Shafi'i school, upright (adil), that is, not openly sinful. Ask your sister privately whether she agrees with her choice, without anyone present who might pressure her. Practise the wording of the offer with the marriage officiant before the day, or simply appoint him to do it if you are not confident. Both ways are valid. Do not use your position as wali to control your sister's decisions in matters unrelated to her religion or wellbeing. If there is any doubt about your eligibility, ask the marriage officer. See conditions for being a wali.
