Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #104

Our marriage contract was done at the religious office. The family wants a ‘second contract’ on the day of the reception. Is that necessary?

It is not necessary; a valid contract is not repeated just so the family can witness it. Repeating the contract for no reason can cause confusion, as if the first contract were invalid. If the family wants to celebrate the moment, there are other ways. Hold a short tazkirah, ask the wali to give some advice to his son-in-law, and have a du'a session together. You could also show the recording of the actual contract. Renewal of marriage (tajdid nikah) is only done when there is doubt about whether the contract is valid, and that is a different matter. If there is such a doubt, consult the marriage officer. See tajdid nikah.
