The marriage witness did not understand the Arabic used during the contract. Is the contract valid?
A witness needs to understand the meaning of the offer and acceptance; if he did not understand the language used at all, his testimony can be called into question. In Malaysia, most contracts are pronounced in Malay so that everyone understands. If the family chooses Arabic, make sure the appointed witnesses understand it, or explain the meaning of the wording to them before the contract. If the contract has already taken place and you have doubts, do not draw your own conclusions. See the marriage officer or the state Islamic religious affairs office. They can assess your situation and advise whether the marriage needs to be renewed (tajdid nikah). See the language of ijab and qabul.
