Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #86

I have been asked to be a witness at a friend's wedding. What should I pay attention to?

Your duty is to hear and understand the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul) clearly, and then be ready to confirm it if asked. Sit close enough to the wali and the groom so that the words are heard without disturbance. Do not chat or be busy with your phone during the contract. Understand the language being used; if the officiant uses a language you do not understand, tell him beforehand. If you are not sure the wording was complete, say so politely. It is better to repeat the contract than to let it stand in doubt. Allah says: “stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah” (Surah an-Nisa' 4:135). See conditions for marriage witnesses.
