My father has dementia. Can he still be my marriage guardian (wali)?
It depends on the state of his mind, because a wali must be of sound mind and understand the contract being pronounced. If your father is still clear-headed at certain times and understands what is happening, he may still be able to act as wali or appoint a marriage officiant (jurunikah) to act for him. If his illness has already taken away that capacity, the right of guardianship passes to the next wali in order. Do not decide this yourself. Bring a doctor's report and see the marriage officer at the state Islamic religious affairs office; they will assess who is eligible. Whatever the decision, include your father in the ceremony as a sign of love, even if he does not pronounce the contract. See the order of paternal guardians (wali nasab).
