Can my maternal uncle be my marriage guardian?
No; in the Shafi'i school, paternal guardians (wali nasab) are only male relatives on the father's side. A maternal uncle, maternal grandfather and a half-brother through the mother are not on the list of guardians. The order begins with the father, the paternal grandfather, a full brother, then a half-brother through the father, followed by nephews and paternal uncles. If none of them is eligible, a wali hakim will marry you off. Your maternal uncle can still help, for example as a witness or by leading the arrangements for the ceremony. Bring a list of the male relatives on your father's side and check it with the marriage officer early. See the order of paternal guardians (wali nasab).
