My spouse is addicted to drugs or gambling. What can I do?
Put the safety of yourself, your children and the family's finances first, while encouraging your spouse to get treatment.
Alcohol, gambling and drugs are forbidden and destructive (5:90), and addiction is an illness that needs treatment, not just advice. Steps: protect the family's money (separate accounts), do not take on their gambling debts, get help from the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) or an addiction specialist, and join family counselling. If addiction leads to violence or neglect of maintenance, make a police report and contact Talian Kasih 15999. The Syariah Court can deal with maintenance claims and, in certain circumstances, judicial dissolution (fasakh). See Counselling and Nushuz & conflict.
