Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #71

My young child always disturbs me when I want to pray. How do I manage it?

Having a young child around while you pray is not an obstacle, but their first chance to see worship as a normal part of home life. Make sure they are safe and busy with something before you begin the prayer, or lay out a small prayer mat beside you so that they copy you. Do not break off your prayer for ordinary disturbances; carry on calmly as long as they are safe. Take turns with your spouse watching the child so that each of you can pray with focus. Do not get angry after the prayer, because they do not yet understand; instead, praise them when they sit quietly. A child who grows up seeing their parents pray will come to love prayer earlier. See prayer guide.
