Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #72

My young child often hits or bites friends while playing. How do I correct this?

When a young child hurts a friend with their hands or teeth, it is usually their way of expressing a feeling they cannot yet put into words, not a sign that they are bad. Stop the behaviour immediately and calmly, look them in the eye, and say briefly that it hurts their friend. Teach them words for their feelings, for example ‘I'm angry’ or ‘I want to play’, so that they have another way. Show compassion to the friend who was hurt so that your child learns empathy. Avoid hitting back to hurt them, because that teaches the very thing you are forbidding. Praise them when they play nicely. If it is frequent and aggressive, talk to a paediatrician.
