May one propose to a woman who is still in her ʿiddah?
It is forbidden to propose openly to a woman still in her ʿiddah; in the ʿiddah of a raj'i talaq, even a hint is forbidden.
A woman in the ʿiddah of a raj'i (revocable) talaq (first or second talaq) is still treated as a wife because her husband may take her back, so proposing to her in any form is forbidden. For a woman in the ʿiddah of her husband's death or of an irrevocable (ba'in) talaq, Allah permits hinting (ta'rid) such as "I am looking for a righteous wife like you", but forbids a clear proposal and secret promises, and forbids a contract before the ʿiddah ends (al-Baqarah 2:235). A marriage contract during the ʿiddah is void. See ʿiddah & rujuk and khitbah.
