Can I ask my child about my ex-spouse's life in the other home?

Questioning your child to spy on your ex-spouse's life puts an unfair burden on him and teaches him to keep secrets or carry tales. He will feel torn between the two sides and may learn to play one against the other. Ask your child how he is, about his feelings and experiences, not about the other household's private matters. If you need to know something important for his welfare, ask your ex-spouse directly, not through the child. Show him that both homes are his safe spaces, not places he must keep secret from you. Let him enjoy his time in both places without guilt. See communication & emotions.
