My young child often asks about his father, who has passed away. How do I answer well?

Answer honestly, gently and in a way suited to your child's age, and let him remember and talk about his father. Avoid hiding the death with confusing words such as ‘Daddy is having a long sleep’, because that creates fear. Explain that his father has returned to Allah and that we pray for him. Keep memories alive: show photos, tell stories of his father's goodness, and teach your child to pray for him after solat. Let your child grieve and ask again and again without being scolded. Include him in visiting the grave if appropriate. Remembering his father with love helps a child accept the loss. See educating the family.
