My child keeps hoping we will get back together. How do I answer honestly?
Answer gently but clearly, so your child does not live with a hope that keeps hurting him. That hope is natural for a child, because he loves both his parents. For example, say: ‘Mummy understands you want us to live together again. Mummy and Daddy won't be getting back together, but we both love you forever.’ Do not give vague promises such as ‘let's see’ if you are already certain. Let your child be sad, and patiently repeat the same answer every time he asks. Make sure your ex-spouse gives the same message. If the hope persists and disturbs him emotionally, get help from a child counsellor. Read more on the children and family page.
