My ex-husband is going to remarry. How do I prepare our children to accept this news?
Let the children hear the news from their father if possible, and your role is to give their feelings a safe space. Suggest to your ex-husband that he tell the children himself, in gentle language and with the reassurance that his love has not changed. Afterwards, ask the children how they feel without steering their answers. They may be confused, jealous or worried about being forgotten. Avoid sarcastic comments about the new wife, even if your own heart aches. Children need to know they can love both homes without betraying you. Look after your own feelings too by sharing them with a trusted adult, not with the children. Read more on the children and family page.
