I have custody of our child. Can I change his school without my ex-husband's consent?

First check the terms of your custody (hadhanah) order; even if day-to-day decisions are in your hands, major matters are best discussed with the father. The father remains the guardian (wali) and the provider of maintenance, so a change of school affects him too, for example in fees and the visiting schedule. Tell him your proposal in writing along with the reasons, such as distance, learning needs or your child's health. Give him room to give his view within a reasonable time. If he objects without good reason, or the court order requires joint consent, refer to the Syariah Court. Decisions that have been discussed are usually easier for both the child and his father to accept. See hadhanah (custody).
