⚖️ Polygyny: rulings & justice · #131

Can I reduce a wife's turn as a punishment when she does something wrong?

The rota (turn of nights) and maintenance (nafkah) are a wife's rights, not rewards you withdraw to punish her when she makes a mistake. Withholding rights as punishment is injustice, even when you are angry or hurt. If there is a problem, resolve it through discussion, advice, or referral to qualified people — not by boycotting her rights. Withholding obligatory rights only adds sin; it does not solve the problem. If your wife is truly nusyuz (disobedient), there is a proper way according to Islamic law; refer to the religious affairs office and do not act out of anger. Justice is still required even when the relationship is tense. See women's rights.
