May one marry without one's parents' blessing?
For a woman, the consent of her wali (guardian) (usually her father) is a condition of a valid marriage in the Shafi'i school; for a man, his parents' blessing is not a condition of validity but is strongly encouraged as an act of devotion to them.
Strive to gain their blessing tactfully: understand the reasons for their objection, involve a go-between or a respected relative, and show that the candidate is ready. If a father rejects a compatible candidate without a Shariah-recognised reason, the woman may apply for a wali hakim (judge as guardian) through the Syariah Court — not marry secretly or abroad without permission. Remember, obedience and kindness to parents is a command of Allah (al-Isra' 17:23). Procedural details are in Marriage guardian.

Perbezaan mazhab. Mazhab Hanafi membenarkan wanita dewasa yang berakal menikahkan dirinya dengan pasangan sekufu tanpa wali, namun undang-undang di Malaysia mengikut mazhab Syafi'i yang mensyaratkan wali.
