🕊️ Conflict & resolution · #212

When should we take our child to counselling, and how do we prepare them?

Consider counselling for your child when they show marked changes such as becoming depressed, withdrawn, or their studies suffering because of problems at home. Children sometimes carry the burden of their parents' conflict without being able to express it. Choose a counsellor who is used to children or teenagers, and explain honestly to your child, in a way suited to their age, that this is a safe place to talk, not a punishment. Do not turn the session into a place to dig for information about your spouse. Keep improving the atmosphere at home, because that is the main cause affecting your child. Work with the school if needed. Reassure your child that they are loved throughout this process. See mental health.
