Q&A › Conflict & resolution

🕊️ Conflict & resolution · #120

The children saw us having a bad fight. Should we explain or apologise to them?

Children who see their parents fight also need to see their parents make up, so they learn that conflict can be repaired. Do not act as if nothing happened, because children feel the tension even if they do not understand what it is about. In age-appropriate words, say: ‘Earlier, Dad and Mum got angry and raised our voices. That was not good, and we have made up.’ Reassure them that the fight was not their fault and that your love for them has not changed. Avoid taking sides or running down your spouse in front of the children. Seeing their parents apologise teaches children a skill they will use all their lives. See communication & emotions.
