🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #9

What is the minimum age of marriage for Muslims in Malaysia?

For Muslims in Malaysia, the minimum age is usually 18 for men and 16 for women; below that age requires the permission of a Syariah Judge. In Selangor, since 18 March 2019 the minimum age has been 18 for both men and women (Enactment A56, which amends s.8 of the 2003 Enactment).
The Shariah itself sets no particular age, but stresses maturity (rushd) and the ability to bear responsibility (4:6), while the authorities have the right to set limits for the public good (4:59). State Islamic family laws set these age limits as a protective measure, and several states have tightened or are tightening the conditions for underage marriage. The court will assess the applicant's maturity, health, schooling and welfare. Because provisions differ between states and can be amended, please consult your state enactment or States page.
