Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #90

My husband divorced me without giving any reason. Do I have the right to know why?

Legally, the talaq still takes effect even if the husband gives no reason, but your wish to know is entirely natural. Islam does not require a husband to explain the reason for a talaq, but good character calls on him to be honest and not leave you guessing. You can ask for an explanation once, calmly, for example: ‘I don't want to argue; I just need to understand so I can move on.’ If he still refuses, do not let yourself be trapped searching for an answer that may never come. Focus your energy on your clear rights: iddah maintenance, mut'ah (consolatory gift) and matters concerning the children. Counselling sessions can help you work through this loss.
