Must a husband get his first wife's permission before marrying again?

Under Syariah law, the first wife's permission is not a condition for the validity of a second marriage. In Malaysia, however, the husband must first apply for Syariah Court permission, and the court will summon the existing wife to hear her views. The wife has no veto, but her evidence — for example on the husband's financial means or treatment — can influence the court's decision. Although permission is not obligatory, discussing honestly and seeking the wife's blessing is strongly required etiquette because it protects the existing bond (Surah an-Nisa' 4:19).
