Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #71

Family and friends keep asking the real reason for my divorce. What should I say?

You are not obliged to tell anyone the private details of your divorce, and covering your ex-spouse's faults is still required even though the relationship has ended. Prepare one short, dignified answer, for example: ‘We tried, and this is the best decision for both of us.’ Then change the subject. Gossiping about your ex-spouse restores nothing; it spreads and shames the children. If you truly need somewhere to unburden yourself, choose one trustworthy person or a counsellor, not everyone who asks. Your dignity is kept when you do not turn a private wound into a story. See counselling.
