Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #242

When I feel hurt, I easily throw out words that wound my spouse. How do I guard my tongue?

Words spoken when hurt can leave wounds that take a long time to heal, so guard your tongue before you regret it. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018). When your heart is hurt, choose to stay silent for a while until it passes, rather than release words that cannot be taken back. Express your disappointment once calm, naming the action rather than insulting the person. If you have already gone too far, apologise sincerely straight away. A guarded tongue is among the most frequent charities you can give your spouse. See communication & emotions.
