Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #371

I realise I shop to soothe an empty or stressed heart. What should I do?

Shopping may bring relief for a moment, but an empty heart is never filled with things; it is often topped up with regret and debt instead. Recognise the feeling that triggers it: boredom, sadness or stress, because naming it weakens its power. Before buying, give yourself a one-day pause and ask whether you really need it. Replace the habit with something that fills the soul: a walk, dhikr, talking with a loved one, or helping others. Allah reminds us that “in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest” (Surah ar-Ra'd 13:28). If the urge is hard to control, see a counsellor. See mental health.
