What are the criteria for choosing a wife according to Islam?

The main criterion in choosing a wife is her religion and character, although wealth, lineage and beauty may also be taken into account.
The Prophet ﷺ said that a woman is married for four things — her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion — and then advised: choose the one with religion and you will prosper. He also said the best adornment of this world is a righteous woman. Scholars add other qualities such as being affectionate, fertile (if known), compatible in background and life goals, and from a good family.
