Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #149

Both our families have started taking sides and quarrelling since our divorce. How do we calm things down?

The two of you need to be the first to calm your own families, because they usually follow the tone you set. Tell your family clearly that you do not want your ex-spouse insulted, especially in front of the children. Avoid sharing details of the dispute that only fuel their anger. Allah says: “The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your two brothers (who are in dispute)” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:10). If there is a family member respected by both sides, ask them to act as peacemaker. Limit gatherings that risk tension until things settle down. See family and in-laws.
