Q&A › Existing wife & prospective wife

🤝 Existing wife & prospective wife · #164

Sometimes I catch myself wishing my husband would divorce his first wife so I could get more. Is this feeling right?

Wishing for your co-wife to be divorced for your own advantage is a feeling to be fought, not followed. The Prophet ﷺ said: “It is not lawful for a woman to ask for her sister (co-wife) to be divorced in order to empty her plate, for she will have what has been decreed for her” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5152). Your provision and your share do not grow by tearing down someone else's marriage; they have already been set by Allah. Turn your energy to improving your own relationship with your husband. If this feeling is strong because your rights are being neglected, deal with that issue of rights directly, not by hoping for the other side's ruin. Pray for good, not harm, and your heart will be calmer. See relationships between co-wives.
