Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #282

My parents are old but stubborn and refuse to accept help or advice. What should I do?

Refusing help usually comes from a wish to keep their dignity and control, not just stubbornness. Respect their wish to be independent as far as possible, and offer help in a way that does not belittle them. Instead of giving orders, ask about their preferences and give them room to make decisions. Start with small kinds of help that are easy to accept, and build trust slowly. Involve people they listen to, such as a favourite child or an old friend. In urgent matters of safety and health, be gentle but do not stay completely silent. Pray that Allah softens their hearts and stay patient. See communication & emotions.
